Without incurring the wrath of Google:

Can I have the same articles on a blog site and on a web site?
Can I have the same articles on two web sites with different hosts, names, whois?

If not: (presuming any of the above makes a gnat's dick of difference).

How substantial should the changes be?
Title?
Title, first paragraph?
Title, first and last paragraphs?
Whole caboodle?

It is generaly considered that a page has to be 85% or over to be considered duplicate,so a bit of juxtopositioning here and there usualy does the trick,like the title ,description and any spare content on the page.
there are programs that test your page for similarity to another can't think of the URL but a quick search should find them

I agree with Earl,

Dunno about 85% being the magic number - but sounds about right to me.

Duplicate content across 2 sites is not good

Again, I agree wil Earl I have never found out the exact % but that sounds good!

We are currently doing a similar exercise for ourselves so I will let you know!

There is the case where the same article is published by multiple website though. Google must have to allow for this I would have thought.

This tool gives a % of similarity between two pages on two sites.
Most of the tools seem just to measure for similarity between pages in one site. I'd have thought duplicating content within a site was just plain ole fashioned dumb, but, I know nussin'
Another check for similarity is checking for plagiarism, done with this.

Any more out there?

This is one of the problems with rushing out and starting a business blog - suddenly you've either sucked all the quality content off your main site and onto your blog, or you are fighting with duplicate content.

Shouldn't be a problem if your blog and website have distinct purposes, likely to come from the fact that there was a good reason / purpose in creating a blog in addition to the website.

Why no use "no index, no follow" on one of the posts, therefore no duplicate content. Or just do a summary on one site linking to the main article?

Why not?
Because I would prefer to have all the sites, (Main site, blog site, pointing site) to get the ratings, and blocking indexing would booga that up.
I was, as usual and natural, trying to do something with the minimum amount of work. However it seems that I'll just have to rewrite each of 25 articles 3 times, so..19:20 now, about 20:45 should all be done. Easy Peasy make 'em Cheesey.

Too much duplicate content could be detrimental to you in more ways than just the search engines..
Customers could visit, read your site, then go read your blog. If its just a big
copy of your parts of your site they with a few alterations, they will think your just wasting their time/lazy etc.

Customers want to see real genuine content, unique, interesting content.
That is also, what the search engines love the most to.....

Hi, Content should always be Unique so having the same articles is not really a good thing to do.

Decide which site requires the targeted traffic, and use the full article.

Then provide relevant keyword anchor text links and descriptions from the other site or sites.

One approach I have seen is to use head and tail paragraphs then keep the substantive information the same.
