Where would you look for a plumber or plasterer?

I am doing some market research to help us with our local advertising for plumbing and plastering business. The questions are where and how you would look for a plumber or plasterer if you needed one.

allways go on recommendations.

Not a good idea to ask for a survey where people have to enter there email address I thought you wanted information.

so could not complete.

It's not mandatory, it's just if people want to leave it with a comment for me ie; to request me to email them the results when finished or to leave me a little message. 4 completed anonymously so far and 2 left their email address... but I am not tracking or importing the contacts :) (goes against my religion normally... but not for this survey)

I get 1500 emails a day so very touchy about giving out me email address.:mad::p

well I did put me name and I certainly would not use google to find a plumber or a plasterer.

Only recommendations for moi.;)

Its just one of those things for me that anything to do with building work I like recommendations from friends or other personal experiences.

But maybe thats just me as I move in a world where I get to know a lot of people.( or is it just that I been around a long while.?):|:)

I know, I'm only jesting;) thing is, you have to cater for the majority. No point listening to you and then saying google does not work for tradesmen:rolleyes:
Bloke on earlier said he would only select a trade on google if via a directory site that had client recommends...can't please everyone all of the time:)

Good survey Max.
Might be an idea next time to include check boxes rather than just radio buttons, altho' that might a) overcomplicate it 'spose, and b) might not be possible on CC.
Might get more info though.

Is that square check boxes instead of round ones? (would prob have to pay extra for square ones :) )

thats a very definate statement - what proof have you that what you say is true because those of us trades here with websites have the proof that you're dead wrong....

Ridiculous statement.

As stated I as an individual would use family and friends recommendation and the only insider information I have is that my son runs a large company in the building industry therefore I have access to various trades.:D

For the average person I would think they use search engines and other forms of advertising.

Born out by the fact that 1,000 people a day search for plumbers on adword alone everyday.

The other thing is that google, websites, mailshots, social media all enhance recommendations... people go onto sites after being referred by others. It not always and either/or scenario.

There are lots of referral systems out there, just look at the boom in trade directories where the concept of referral is being attached to directories, look at the facebook "likes" etc.

I ran this survey about 3 years ago and at that time word of mouth recommendations were top then and I expect them to be top now but what I am also really interested in are the other avenues that are used in conjunction with that. 3 years ago Yell.com was 2nd favourite after recommendations in my survey but now so far it is google. Maybe that's because 3 years ago not many tradespeople had their own websites but now they do, and the public expect to find them on there or maybe it's because Yell.com have completely stuffed up their advertising logic and the way they display info (imo), who knows?

Yes there are those that ask in the pub etc, but it also depends on the type of work... you might go for a loose recommendation in a pub if someone recommended a plumber who fixed their outside tap but they would probably ask for more info if they were going to spend £3-4k on a bathroom refit.

We also get enquiries via new visitors who are living out of the area but want work doing to properties within the area such as elderly relatives, or rented property not through an agent, or recently bought in the area etc, so to make the comment "nobody does" is just tosh really :)

1K LOL, thats pitiful and 999 of them are ALIv8 trying to prove a point about seo, stop trying to argue every point and try reading once in a while


you can start by wondering why a plasterer is asking "do people search for a plasterer online"

obviously not.

Perhaps it is you that needs to read once in a while instead of arguing every point

And Sirearl was referring to Adwords which excludes the organic searches, maps, sponsored listings and directories.

Yes online is an option in the survey, if you clicked on the link you would see the questions... you can just have a nose and not complete it if you like. There are questions about whether people already have a regular plumber or plasterer, if they use yell.com how do they search, if they use google how do they search, would they respond to leaflets and so on. So, the question is not Do people search on like but How do they search.

It's got nothing to do with little gangs and everything to do with general manners :)

you know the answer:rolleyes:. - anyway, in response to your point, you're right this thread is specifically about plastering and plumbing so my response in that context was wrong apologies:redface:

However, out of interest if we were to talk about trades generally - plastering/plumbing/carpentry/domestic heating engineers/ landscapers/fencing contractors/ roofers/ painters & decorators etc - you know, all the usual trades that are similar to plastering and plumbing - in your opinion, does your statement still stand that -- no one uses google to seach for one???

Good survey IMO.

Like others, I always go by personal recommendation. However, in the absence of that, then it would be straight onto Google to check out the professionalism of the outfit. Avoiding the big nationals with a massive marketing budget if possible:)

I have emailed everyone who left their email address on the survey. Pls pm me if you want to see the full results and I will email a pdf document to you.

Couple of highlights

Where would you look for plumber and plasterer
Top - Recommendation
2nd - Google
3rd - Yellow pages book
Bottom - scored zero... yell.com, and noticeboards
Middle - local newspaper, local guides such as parish mag, web directories
Some comments received to say they would google as well as find recommendations from friends and family.

Would you keep a leaflet? Yes 35% No 65%

What's important when choosing a plumber or plasterer

Top: Reliability & Punctuality
2nd: Testimonials & References
3rd: Availability

70% of people said that if they did search on Yell.com they would also search on google.

there is a very successful site called myhammer.com all trades are covered and rated by customers seeking trades. imo soon to be the best source for customers to find good trades.
works quite simply:
a customer with works needing done usually domestic stuff places an ad with their idea of what it mite cost them.
trades then tender for the work (not always lowest tender wins). the customer can compare price,qualifications,others ratings and write ups (good and bad) and make their choices.
i have to admit i mite be biase as im getting more work from this one site than i could ever expect from my usual marketing/advertising methods.
long may it keep flowing :D
