Hi everyone
I am thinking of starting an ebay shop and i am unsure of the VAT concerning ebays fees for listings and also paypals too.
Is VAT included in the fees incurred when selling an item on ebay or is it added on afterwards and is this the same on paypal or different?
Thanks for the help guys

As far as I am aware vat is included in the charge, I certainly have never seen anything added on afterwards.

Vat is included in Ebay fees. If you are VAT registered you can give Ebay your VAT number and they will amend the fees for you to be without VAT though it does take a few months for them to process.

I also think VAT is charged in Luxemborg, not UK - why not look on their site - it will tell you, somewhere?

VAT etc. is already included in the fees - check their invoices and seller account. If you're looking to reclaim it, providing you run your operations as a business properly - including all registrations, paypal, etc.- you can simply pass on your VAT registration details and it will all work out okay (theoretically).

Why do you think Ebay's shifted it's operation to Luxembourg?

Good info on the Hanley site, thanks for the link.

Does anyone know about the paypal fees part - which seem unavoidable on ebay.

I never have to pay VAT on bank charges so I assume that there would be none here either.

Ebay's registered office is based in Luxembourg and this is why VAT reg businesses in the UK can have the VAT levied from their fees. If they were based in the UK, it wouldn't be possible.

However you should include the VAT to the cost of the items you sell, I think it's not allowed to sell an item and add the VAT once the sale has been agreed.

Sometimes, it adds VAT on after, so the total charge you see as "Buy Now" is not the complete total. However, it does count it all up before checkin' out with PayPal. ;)
