XLN Telecom

Hi, we are looking to use XLN for 3 new business analogue telephone lines and wanted to get a bit of feedback on the company.

We will NOT be using XLN for broadband as I am aware their broadband is awful however I have not heard much 'bad press' on their telecom service?

Can anyone comment?

    I can't speak for or against XLN as I don't know them but before you get into a contract to rent old technology, please do a bit of research on VoIP; it will save you a lot of money and do more for you.

    I'm with XLN.

    Broadband is terrible, shockingly terrible.

    Not had a problem with the phones but they do tie you in for 3 years, hefty fines for ending early (£500+ iirc) and you have to gives them a years notice, or something daft like that if you wish to end after the 3 years.

    I can't see you giving them a years notice?
    What wasy is it terrible? We don't have many problems at all.

    Broadband lost connection every single day for at least 30 minutes.

    We had Pipex for 4 years previously without trouble and after transferring to XLN, but keeping all the same equipment, had all the problems.

    Kept phoning up and running tests but nothing ever changed. In the end is was just easier to get virgin cable broadband installed as well and use that instead.

    It may not be a years notice but there is some kind on extra long notice period. Been with then 18 months now so can't remember exactly.

    I am not 100% sure so you may wish to check but with XLN I think you can only connect XLN broadband to XLN phone lines (bit like Opal). We run a WiFi company and so far we have been unable to connect our broadband to XLN lines!

    There are far better companies out there doing lines and broadband than XLN Telecom. Why not put in a couple of lines and then use VoiP - you will save money this way.

    Also watch out for XLN's rolling contracts and othetr small print !!!

    Thanks for all the input. Is anyone aware if O2 broadband can be put on an XLN line?

    Regarding the VOIP recommendation, we have looked into this and still of the impression it is to 'new'. Although our broadband has been highly reliable over the last two years, we have still had a number of drop-outs, router issues, BT issues etc causing us to lose broadband (briefly) but we have had NO phone issues (analogue lines) and even though the loss of broadband is a huge inconvenience, losing broadband AND voip lines even briefly would be a huge loss to our business. We have looked at ISDN and the increased cost is not worth it to us, the good old fashioned 'old technology' analogue (multi)line is ideal for us.

    Not a fan of utility warehouse, we serve far too many customers who are unhappy with their services. Not sure they even do business lines?
    With every service provider there are some dissatified customers, but far too many sounds a bit harsh considering we have an over 94% of customer satisfaction to other companies below 60% and falling.

    However we do do competive business lines, which I am happy to say all my customers have been very happy with the services. But that could be because I pride myself in making sure that the customer gets the service they want and if we cant provide all that the customer wants then I will let them know that and suggest others.

    We have only tried to connect 2 or 3 lines but every time we have tried our providers have turned them down.     I think I am right in saying that LLU's are defranchised now so you should be able to connect with any provider.

    I have just spoken with O2 and they say there is no problem putting there service on a line as long as the line is a WLR line (BT Wholesale Line Rental), I am going to double check with XLN that this is the case before I migrate...

    I Have my phone line and broadband with XLN and couldnt be happier, half the price BT quoted me, inclusive calls and my broadband is ALWAYS there and really fast (usually about 170000)

    Maybe the broadband problems depend on the area you're in

    I do not have a telephone line at all now., I just have cable broadband and use Voiptalk.org (hope it is ok to say who they are) Have done for nearly 2 years and it has been fault free.

    Quality service, flexible, number follows me on my laptop or voip phone. My mother-in-law cannot work out how I can have a Nottingham number when I am on holiday in USA :)

    Seriously though, I am about to get a new 11 inch touch screen Win 7 PC with my whole telecoms suite on it.

    You may not want that, but free calls to just about anywhere on a standard phone that can go anywhere has to be good.

    Just joined your discussion. We have been providing VoIP to small business owners - we always get our customers to test their line for VoIP - I can give you information on how to do this - this then gives you reassurance about the quality of the line. We as a business also use the VoIP service so I can tell you first hand that the service is very reliable. I agree with CJD it is always important to research and forums like this are ideal to get feedback from others who are using competitors.

    You don't mention if you rely heavily on your mobile? We have voip lines integrated with mobile too so that you save on your phone bill and your mobile.

    Hi all,

    New here, just been reading the comments on XLN. I have been with them for 4 years and always found the Broadband and telephone service very good.

    The down side - I am just about to retire from my heating business after 45 years and rang XLN to ask about a MAC number as I wanted to transfer my number to link with the number I have in my home, but they tell me I can not do this as I have to give 42 days notice prior to the renewal of the 12 month rolling contract. I had no idea it was a rolling contract and they do not write and advise that the contract is about to renew which would give you time to give it consideration.

    I understand from OFcom, that they highlighted the rolling contracts in 2008 as not being in compliance with the fair contract condition legislation, I mentioned this to them, they agreed, but would not change their minds.

    I will now just cancel the contract and walk away without transferring the number.

    I have written about my experiences with these monkeys on my blog. The deal made on the phone was not the same as the contract that arrived. The 12 month contract mysteriously became a 24 month contract. The broadband is restricted, don't think about using You Tube or anything else XLN decide is a "non business service."

    We are in the IT industry and really do see the benefits of VOIP but never underestimate the downsides of it either. If your broadband service fails for any reason you lose all your telecoms...

    All you eggs in one basket is a risky strategy but this depends on your business, for us the risks are far to great.
    Just a quick note on this.. most VoIP companies will provide you with an emergency divert number/s, so that if you do experience problems with your broadband connection, then all of your calls can be diverted to another landline / mobile number.. amongst other fail over solutions, so please dont be put off by this..

    Good as a backup but with the unstable nature of adsl at this point in time, I would rather stick to tried and tested methods. As fibre is rolled out and stability & speed increases, then voip will probably replace fixed lines, but it just 'ain't there yet'.

    Just to add, we have 3 or 4 voip calls per day (we are on fixed line speaking to a voip user) and I always can tell by the washy sound. I always say ' are you by any chance on a voip line' and most of the time the answer is 'yes' or 'no, i'm on hand free'...
