Worldpay is down - switch to alternatives

Headsup: For those who use worldpay, their payment system is down - switch to an alternative.

From their website:

Since approximately 07:50 AM GMT today, 20thy AUGUST 2008, a technical issue is occurring with the payment service. We are unable to process payments at this time.
We are working to resolve the issue urgently.

Thanks for the heads up.

A good example of not having a single point of failure on your own website and offer more than one payment processor. I have another two my customers can use but I think might add a third now just in case.

One problem with WorldPay, is that in their terms and conditions, clause 26:
26 Other services

Except to take effect after the expiry of a period of notice validly given under this Agreement, You shall not enter into an agreement with any individual, group of individuals or company that offers products or services similar to those offered by Us while this Agreement remains in force.

it effectively means that you cannot add a plan b backup payment provider, e.g. PayPal, once you have WorldPay, so it is a good idea to set up your alternative payment providers before you go with Worldpay.

That rules out putting the third one in then.

I may have to rethink using WorldPay in the future if we get anymore of these outages then.

That's blatently anti-competitive and wouldn't last 5 minutes under legal scrutiny, I wouldn't give that clause a second thought.

The only thing Worldpay have left going for them is their reliability, if they cut corners on that as well their service holds no value for new merchants.

Exclusivity deals are signed all the time, there nothing wrong with putting such a clause in your terms and conditions, other than anoying your customers.

Fortunately I signed up to other providers prior to going with WorldPay but I wonder how far WP would go to enforce this condition given the current economic climate? RBS posted record losses for the first half of this year so it wouldn't make business sense to start banning customers because they are offering PayPal or A.N.Other provider.

2CheckOut (2CO) can be an alternative. The setup fee is USD49.
They will charge you 5.5% + USD0.45 for every transaction.

5.5% per transaction???! I can only assume anyone would use these payment processors because they cant get a merchant account, as that is daylight robbery!

That's exactly what I think.
5.5% is a very high percentage

Umm....previous poster, no reason not to respond but I assume that you realise that this thread dates back to August 2008, so not exactly current.....
