Windows XP Fax.

Do I need a land line number to use the XP fax machine Or can I use skype? Or does it have to be the same number as my modem?

I have found out that you can not use skype to send and recive faxes.

Quite a good option if you're looking for incoming and outgoing fax facilities is to get an 0870 fax to email number for incoming faxes and the next time you upgrade your printer (if your current one does not have the facility) get one that faxes out.

Ozzy (on these forums) has free fax to email systems I think.

For Windows fax to send and receive faxes your modem needs to be connected to a phone line.

Hi Mathew,

the 0870 number goes to a fax on a server provided by the company you get them from, they convert it to a jpeg or tiff file and email it to you as an attachment. So long as you can view the file then you'll be able to read/print your fax.

Faxing out is slightly different, simply configure the fax machine to show the 0870 fax number you have.

Thanks very much for the fax info guys. I have just moved into new offices and didn't want an additional number... this is excellent just tested it for incoming faxes.

Does anyone know if you can send faxes through this system, I can't see it on the website.

Hi Misstique,

I don't think you can send faxes via this system. A way around it is to see if your printer or any of your Microsoft software has a fax facility - alot of the time you don't need a physical fax to send the fax and can just use the modem built into your pc.

Thanks Matrix, I bought a multi-function printer last year, only to find out that the fax doesn't work with broadband!

I've tried printer to fax software and got no result.


Any ideas welcome!!

Do you need a telephone line going into it or maybe with/without the adsl filter?

You use the phone number for the line you plug the telephone cable into.

Normal call charges apply.

My fax (using Win XP fax program) is on my normal phone line and I've signed up to one of those pay so much per month for local and national calls so I don't actually pay anything for sending faxes, just the monthly fee. Receiving a fax costs nothing because the sender pays.

If you've got a non-geogrpahical number (0845, 0800, 0870, etc) then it's still normal charges apply as if it was a phone call.
