Hi there.

I am doing some research and would like to ask any business what the motivation was for starting?

Question can apply to on or offline business.

If you would prefer to PM me an answer, please feel free.

Thanks.

I started mine to have the flexibility and freedom of choice - Unfortunately what I didn't realise was that all I did was swop the boss for the bank manager! - lol

Didn't want to work in an office any more and have a boss. ...and wanted to have dogs which would have been too difficult with a full time job in an office!

Finally realised, after 15 years, that working for other people was a mug's game. With support of my wife, I decided to give up work and try to find enough clients to keep our heads above water - had six months worth of savings to tide us over and then would have got another job if not enough clients. After 3 months, I was fully booked, never been short of work since, in fact mostly I have too much work. Should have done it years before. Not good for money though - first five years I wasn't earning as much as I was before as an employee, and not even earning the national average wage, which is pretty bad for a professional, but I was ploughing money back in for premises, equipment, software, etc. Now in years 6 and 7 I'm finally making a decent living, but I'm certainly not going to be a millionaire, and I am fairly certain I could earn more as an employee. But that's not the point, I have quality of personal and working life, I can choose which clients to take on, I can choose my working hours, etc. For me it was freedom and choice rather than pounds in my pocket.

My employer was moving premises, a little too far from home to be viable travelling. I also have elderly parents, who need someone close by to run errands, etc for them and generally keep an eye on them. It is nice to have an extra 2 hours per day which are not spent travelling to/from work (though I do work some serious hours at present).

Had enough of spending months of my life working on a project for it to be canned because "priorities changed", working on modernising the company whilst using outdated technology, onerous corporate governance hindering development, 99% of the time stakeholder managing rather than delivering, office politics

Always enjoyed web work, can concentrate on the work I find interesting, it certainly wasnt for the money (not yet anyway).

It just seemed a good idea at the time. Must have been a bad day.

Every Credit Control position I ever had was great at the beginning, sorting the aged debt out was a challenge, once I had beaten the debtors into submission I just sat there twiddling my thumbs as the cheques rolled in. Being an honest person I realised at that point I was stealing a living, so decided to go it alone.

Some interesting stories, lot of respect for people who leave the security of a job, to go it alone.

I am a nice guy really, 'onest I am guv, but cannot stand being told what to do and can be a little arrogant by nature. I prefer to think of it as over confident, but Mrs estwig says differently;)

So never had a job, never had a boss, always done my own thing, mostly in the building game.

I always looked at it as:- if I'm a good employee who does there job well and makes lots of sales and earns lots of commission for another company, just think how good I'll be if I applied my own skills to my own company. If you do something for yourself and own benefit, you tend to work harder, longer and more enthusiastically, resulting in a more productive life.

My motivation is my children. If I had a full time job, I wouldn't beable to be there for them when they needed me. Or rather, as I have children, I am unable to be there for an employer as they would expect me to be.

I love the flexibile hours that I can plan at my leisure or my clients convenience and knowing that every client I meet is genuinely getting a worthwhile service - that gives me a buzz everytime!

Thanks for all the replies so far!

I got into business on a small scale after selling my Vintage Star Wars collection. In a week I had sold £750's worth of Star Wars figures, something I just had in a box sitting in the attic. It made me think, this has real potential. If I could source a product with a sound supply, I could sell them all day long and that £750 could double and be a regular income.

It didn't happen over night, I spent months looking for a product. I soon realised if I was every going to make any money I needed to think outside of the box. There were thousands of other sellers with the same products, so my prices were consistently dropping to be competitive. Which made it hard to commit to large amounts of stock, ultimately making it impossible to make good money. It was important for me to sell something that interested me, I think that's what kept me motivated throughout the rough times. I was still working so I had an income I could rely on, however, most of the funds were being pushed straight into the business as soon as they hit my account.

After reading many articles, I learnt that goods could be picked up from China at very low prices. Like I said it was very important to me to sell products that interested me. Which was really electronics (being a technology fan), before I was buying branded goods like Sony, Microsoft, and Samsung. The margins were pathetic, I was lucky to make five percent. I knew that these products couldn't really be brought from China due to the amount of counterfeits and to be quite honest I was fed up of making pennies. So I started to look at non-branded electronics, I emailed many companies asking for prices. I then started to research the market and found I could quite easily make forty percent, of course I would have to pay Tax and NI contributions on top of this. But it still leaves me with a good profit. The great thing is, the products I sell are good quality and the prices I sell at are in most cases fifty percent less than the retail for a similar branded product. Please don't mistake what I sell for 'fakes' or 'look-a-like' products, were now looking into adding our own branding as a production run is being held for all of our orders. The designs are unique in every possible way, they really do look smart! I hate fake products as I understand how damaging they are to the real companies, so I wouldn't dream of buying or even selling them.

Anyway, I started selling my goods through eBay. Sales were out of the roof, I couldn't believe my luck. That's what I believe it was luck. Being in the right place, at the right time and all. I had to take on a partner as the work load was getting beyond me and that's not what I wanted. My profits had been sliced in half, which was quite damaging of course. But I don't regret it one bit as our sales have easily tripled since I took on my partner. We now had a good amount of stock and it was arriving weekly in large quantities. So we decided to approach small retailers in our local idea. One of us would go down to there shop after organising a meeting with the Store Manager and hold a demo of the goods. We had a lot of interest and now supply in bulk to a few of the shops in the area. We plan to work on this a lot more in the coming months, hopefully going National. As you can imagine this business has turned into a full-time income for me, as it did take over all of my free time when I was working. So now what I did for a little extra cash had turned into a real business! I can honestly say I earn a lot more now than I ever did whilst working for someone else. However, whats really rewarding about having your own business is the fact that if you work hard you actually see the benefits. Its also great deciding when you can work, I usually work from ten in the morning till three in the afternoon and then later on at night. That way you can spend time with the people you care about. I value that a lot more than the money!

Sorry If I've gone on a little.:)

When I started my business, which I have since sold, I had such a good product that nobody else at all was offering online, it really was a no-brainer, as Tommi says, right place, right time.

In addition I had the added security of an income and free office space from a flexible consultancy job that I could run hand in hand - this covered my bills in the early days.

I soon had to stop the consultancy work as the business grew, I ended up with 10 staff, £5m a year turnover and me losing even more hair than I could afford to.

I wouldn't say I started it for money, but that's certainly why I ended it...

I was working in sales in my industry making a lot of money for other people then realised I actually knew more than the people I was working for as I had just got so into what I was doing. I could also see them making mistakes that I knew how to correct but I wasnt listened to. Had to really push to make any changes then when they did take them up and they worked they took the credit - I started losing respect for them and thought it was time I showed what I was made of, so I resigned, took a months holiday, spent 3 months doing the groundwork and setting up and launched about 2 years ago now and never looked back!

I actually started my own business because I was so frustrated at the lack of options available to me as a Credit Manager.
I used to dread when I had to escalate an unpaid debt to either a solicitor or a debt collection agent. The fees or commission rates payable to the agents totally wiped out any profit we had made for the work or goods supplied. In effect, it cost us our profit to recover a debt due to us.
If it wasn't bad enough that my employers had to go without cash flow they then had to pay for the privilege of getting paid what was due to them, whilst all the time the debtors abused the payment process and reaped the benefits of holding on to our cash.

I became so frustrated with the injustice of it all and finally flipped my lid.

I new that I could recover debts just as well as the best in the industry and what was more important, I could do it free of charge thanks to something called Statutory Right to Interest.
The rest, as they say, is history.
Since we started we have successfully recovered debts from £200 up to £175,000 and not had to charge our clients a single penny for the service.

Was it worth doing? I think so.

To make a little bit of extra money, and have a bit of fun. We were pretty much strapped for cash but the business grew more and more successful and here we are, nearly 8 years down the line. Fab.

I started mine by mistake really, I was looking for an extra bit of income.

I left school and took the usual route of going to college but I quit on the first day as the course was not for me. It was an IT course which covered everything briefly and would ideally need to carry on at uni which I didn't want to do.

So I took a year out as I applied for a course in a college about 20 miles away which gave me time to pass my driving test too and I self-taught myself PHP, etc.

I then started doing freelance work and then decided to cancel the college course to look for a job in PHP/Web development but I found they were poorly paid around here unless you were willing to travel up to London.

I found myself in a catch 22 of needing experience to get a job but I couldn't get the experience without getting a job first so I decided to set up my own website which cost me nothing but my time - just for an extra bit of money to gain a regular income but didn't expect it to do as well as it has.

It's now my sole income and I love not having to be in a certain place at a certain time - doing what I want basically!! + earning money while sleeping is always good, seeing as it's what I do best Lol. :D

When developing our software the focus behind it was I generally felt that it will make a difference for businesses and earn them more money.

I had to start my own business as the only way i could get into the trade i wanted to be in.. I paid out for training and spent many hours learning all i could from wherever.I started the business part-time and spent many hours doing 2 jobs for 3 years till i was established enough to leave the main job.Ive never looked back as its what i always wanted to do but its being hard work and couldnt have happened without the full support of my wife.
You need to be very driven and focused to succeed and prepared to make sacrifices but still keep the important things like family and friends at the forefront of your mind.
Quality of life is far better and its nice being able to do things last minute like earlier when i took my daughter to gymnastics. I see far more of my daughter growing up as i dont work 9-5. Im off out in a bit to price up some jobs and will be up late doing seo or bookwork. This is the real benefit of running your own business.

Left a job with government, my wife packed in her own business, sold our house, put our children into the car with TV and PS1 and drove to France, No house, job, friends to go to.

Found house within 1 week, had 1 yr off doing nothing, then realised no money left so stated up WH now progressing nicely into a firm favourite with families wanting a holiday.

(had a terrible day today though, i wished i was somewhere else)

So not sure what bracket you would put this under, necessity or own choice (fault)

I think in my case I wanna have more control over my life, when you work for someone else other people will decide eventually if you deserve a new position or not, when you should take your vacations and that sometimes is not gonna depend of how good you are, it will depend of other things, that is what my own business has given to me, I can feel free to take vacations, have the credict for what I've done, go to work anytime and if I have to work extra hours who cares is your own business!!!!.

Bored of being a stay at home Mum and not using the other side of my brain ! I had always worked before I had children and I missed the daily challenges and general hussle and bussle.

I wanted to fit in with the children, so decided to start an online store, I could work from home and hours to suit. Youngest starts school in Sept so hope to devote more time to CKids to really get things moving.

Genetic deficiency I guess.

My great-grandparents were traders in darkest africa (think East India Company types)

Skipped two generations but I started selling ice cream at 13.

I started my own business so I could work 80+ hours a week, never have any spare cash, never have a holiday, have a phone that never stops ringing and backs up with loads of voicemails if turned off for 5 mins piece and quiet...I could go on...

Would I have it any other way....?....definately not!

Ill try and think of some genuine good points later...
