I am just starting out as a freelancer offering book-keeping/accounting services. Firstly I would like a little advice does your clients provide their own Accounting Softwares, or do you have your own Accounting Software?

My new client hasn't a clue about Financial, good job he is a new business starter only three months so it would make it easy for me to start anew with him but I do also intend to grow my client list and would like to perhaps have my own Accounting Software.

I am looking for a Software that I can add several businesses and also different currencies if it's possible. I've used Sage before as an employer and as a business but I keep hearing negative comments about them.

Just would like to know what everyone uses?

Thanks in advance.

My bigger bookkeeping clients have their own accounting package on a PC on their premises. The ones where I just do a few hours for a VAT return or tax return I use my own software.

If a client wanted to to upgrade their accounting software I would recommend a cloud solution as it would let me do the bookkeeping work at my office but would let the client have convenient access to the books as well.

Definitely have a look at VT

There is a free cashbook version you can give some clients

Or a paid for version called Transaction +

And then if you need to do statutory accounts you can use VT Final Accounts

There's a free trial so give them a try.

It might look a bit dated and simple but it's a joy to use I promise you and being able to feed in the transactions into your statutory accounts file is a beautiful thing :)

Hi Helen

At my firm we use VT Transaction and Accounts Portal - both great packages and well worth researching.

Hi Helen - great to hear you are starting your own business! - I am Financial Fitness Coach for QuickBooks so always trying to encourage businesses not to use Excel but a proper accounting package and to work with their accountant and bookkeeper.

I would definitley look at Cloud solutions for some of your clients - backup is dealt with, you can easily help and you can add value easier eg by helping them integrate CRM apps. QuickBooks isnt the only game in town obviously but it would be worth looking at our pro-advisor and cloud advisor programmes which can help market your business. http://www.intuit.co.uk/quickbooks-...ccountants/find-a-local-quickbooks-expert.jsp

Thanks everybody for your replies it is much appreciated. As VT seems to be popular and have been mentioned elsewhere I shall go with VT.

Just to make sure I guess I can go for VT Final Accountants and VT Transactions + would those two software cater for all my needs?

I need a payroll software would anyone recommend a good one please.

Thanks all.

Thanks guys, Moneysoft sound good to me!

I've had a break from my accounting career and done some community care work, working voluntarily for free helping the elderly and vulnerable people with their affairs of course in meantime not realising about changes happening apart from using Sage as an employer, I've used it for my business too which ran for 5 years, I've never had to renew anything once the year support ended now it looks like one is attached to those accounting software renewal perhaps because of the internet everything can be done online.

You learn something new everyday.
