I apologise in advance for the long post but want to acquire some feedback outside of my network.

I have run an online business in the travel arena for 15 years. It's done pretty well keeping myself, my wife and brother employed for this time. Over the last 2 years things have become gradually more difficult with more competitors entering the marketplace and some of these are household names with huge marketing budgets. We had leads coming from CPC and Facebook groups but they have pushed the cost up of Google and they are now paying the admin on the key 3/4 Facebook groups to have sole access. This has caused us a real problem as we just don't have the budget. Although we are in a niche, our products are identical from whomever you purchase so price wins. Last last 2 months should have been our busiest time of year but it's been our worst.months trading.
Fortunately, I've always feared this and have had plans to use skills acquired through the last 15 years to spawn new businesses. But the problems vero the last 2 years have led to alot of self doubt and I've contemplated getting a job. But I really don't think I would stick at a job as it wouldn't have the same drive and ambition as me - my family say that is the easy way out and I've never don't things easily.
I've developed a marketing programme specifically for personal trainers using the experience I have as well as a website booking system which PTs use on a monthly subscription. Whilst there are competitors, I see this as market validation but self doubt comes in again. I am an avid gym goer and talk to the trainers regularly and know it's something smaller PTs could use help with.
Is it worth pushing on through this or is it time to get a job? I've also developed a workout platform which allows PT to post video trialing via a portal for rental by the public - problem with this is lack of cash is putting a stop to this.
I could go on.....I've also worked on a location aware marketing business using smartphone technology...

F££k a job I am the same as you this could all go up in smoke tomorrow and I would find another business

Like you I do a bit of training and even gained my city and guilds in sport back in the eighties. There were limited opportunities then but there are good ones now

Employers not always keen on qualifications from 30 odd years ago.
For whatever reason they often look at more recent experience and training.

There are already a slew of apps for personal trainers. I wouldn’t bother pushing this one.

Pretty much all app development is hard work. You spend more time and money on marketing that you do on actual development.

The business is focused on marketing training for small business with a niche in Personal Trainers.....the booking app is just a side thing we have been playing around with. I know the industry and wouldn't spend cash on marketing it but offer to our marketing clients. The platform for workouts we have developed is going to a mega tough one to make work as needs serious cash to get the eyes on the site.

I'm probably incredibly unemployable anyway as always see new ideas. Need to change this mindset. It's just mega tough when 15 years of work is slowly being ripped away and can't do anything about it....I'm competing against the likes of Expedia who are selling at below cost to buy the marketshare

I would have thought what you're looking at would be very difficult to market without a large budget behind you, so it depends how much you realistically need to earn whilst you're building this up. If you can earn enough by promoting it on a more personal scale, where you can visit PTs and get them signed up then great, but if are only earning a few £s from each subscriber and you need loads to sign up, then that's going to tricky without a big budget. Could you retrain as a PT whilst building this up so you have some regular income in somethng that interests you and well as the new app? Good luck with it all, it's great to see someone who never gives up.

That sounds like a positive not a negative. If you do go down the employment route you sound like a good fit for a Product Manager role.

Some who always see new ideas have problems focusing on the work in front of them. Lasting no more than a day in some jobs.
