What sectors are busy?

Funding fit-outs for hotels is strangely quiet.

I am not sure about what the hotel sector is doing in the UK, but here in Spain fit out is not really seen as necessary for a bit.

The 2021 holiday season will not start until August, if it starts at all here, so the hotels remain quiet, and often boarded up. The sad reality is that a large number of them will never reopen - after a year, almost, of being closed they have run out of reserves.

It's a sad state of affairs.

Not that many have actually failed here yet, but all are bleeding cash. I costs a lot of money to keep a hotel closed.

In reality there will be a huge rebound for rural and holiday destinations, and for weddings & functions. Business travel & inbound tourism will struggle for some time.

Meawhile, speculative investors are picking up some great bargains!

England - hotels near airports will be helped somewhat with quarantine bookings.

Scotland - if the plans for quarantine for everyone arriving works out that is a LOT more hotel quarantine bookings.

May help keep some chains afloat.

There will be a decent sized rebound for hotels and holiday places.

The challenge will be those business gaining the investment to allow themselves to cope with that rebound, and that, to some extent, will depend on when the rebound happens. If it is this year, some will. In the UK in particular there is a capacity issue. If the number of people taking their holidays in the UK increases (likely) then the industry will be able to hike prices considerably - that started to happen last summer, briefly.

The issue of quarantine bookings is an interesting one. Obviously, it will provide some income for hotels - and I personally expect the quarantine requirement to last well into 2022, and to extent to many more countries. It will be a two edged sword - business travellers will have to spend a grand when they arrive in the UK. I cannot imagine many people will take a holiday if it ends with 10 days in a rather grubby UK hotel, confined to room!

And knock on effect on airline industry.

Riding stable up the road from me has gone from 4 horses to 9 last time I counted. Kids not at school they are riding up and down the lane all day every day. What I don't understand is that 9 horses and more trips are not shitting so much as 4. I haven't been able to scoop any up in a bucket for my garden for ages.

Of course, they are still taking bookings, and banking people's money

Especially with Ryanair's jab & go

I have just had an email from Ryanair telling me that there have been some changes to our Easter flights to Lanzarote. I assume that at some stage they will cancel the flights as even if the Government has lifted it's overseas holiday restrictions I'm not sure that I want to go now anyway

At the moment, people from the UK are not permitted to come to Spain. Unless that rule is lifted, it is unlikely many, if any, flights will happen. RyanAir are certainly not accepting bookings on any flights from here back to the UK, even in the summer. BA have just cancelled their March flights.

Realistically, holidays in Spain, including the islands, are not going to happen until August at the earliest.

You must have to be desperate to put up with a spell locked in a room on your return! I am sure some people will, though. But only to countries still open to them, which certainly does not include here in Spain.

There will be people that have to do that.

And how many of us have got back from a holiday and said we need a holiday to recover. Now you can!

It is quite clear from various Government ministers' comments that the booking any kind of holiday for this summer is not what is wanted. And neither would it seem wise, to be frank.

Essential business travel is another conversation - although likewise, it seems to carry a lot of cost and a lot of risk.

That does leave the issue of repatriation of people now displaced by, say, the new EU rules. Of course, arguably the sensible thing here is for those people to stay put until the UK feels it can reopen its borders, but that is not currently permitted. There will be a number of people obliged to leave the EU by the end of March, but there will be not flights for them to catch.

I can’t quite make my mind up whether holiday firms will be so desperate to sell flights and holidays they’ll slash prices or that people will be so desperate to get away they’ll hike them out of the reach of many.

I reckon the second one. The holiday resorts are going to want to have less people there for some time until they get the hotels open again. So I believe holidays in the sun will be a LOT more expensive than we have become used to seeing.

Well, flight prices aren't coming down. You'd have thought with depressed demand, they would but that's not happening. The airlines have to cover their costs and with fewer passengers, they can hike prices for those who really want to travel.

One wonders what is happening with those people whose visas might be expiring who need to leave the UK by a certain date.

Yes. At the moment there is no clarity on that at all.

And the real problem is more basic than the punitive legislation in the UK. There are, in many cases, simply no flights. And there have been no flights for some weeks now.

There are a huge number of people who took vouchers with airlines and holiday companies who will be eager to use them up if possible and TUI have already said that forward bookings for the summer are very high

I would have thought that the new rules announced yesterday will mean that the majority of those summer bookings never get fulfilled.

If you are a family of 4, the COVID tests alone would cost around £1600.00, combined with the uncertainty of what happens if one of those tests means you get marooned somewhere.

And how many holiday destinations will actually allow us in. They do not want us taking our CV variants into their countries either.

Given that the UK's vaccination program is more advanced than those in the holiday destinations, "our" variants less of a concern than those from other places.

Viruses mutate all the time. There are almost certainly other undetected variants out there. We detected ours because our genomic surveillance is very effective. We should be more worried about other variants coming in and undoing the hard work of the vaccine program.

All the people have to do is book for dates when we aren't in lockdown and the destination country has facilities open for tourists.

Then rush back before the country is placed into red list or in the case of Scottish residents, drive back from elsewhere in the UK to Scotland rather than flying back direct.

True. We may want to go to a particular country but they may have their own plans what to do with UK tourists once we arrive.
Plus of course not all the tourist venues being open - or else rammed due to volume of tourists and can't get in anywhere.

Least we can get ahead of the Germans for the towel by the pool. :)
