I think, regardless of the state of the economy, there are businesses that are always steady ie those that provide essentials such as insurance, utilities and other basics such as food, clothing etc.
I guess that's what you have to way up in busienss; most of the most profitable companies in the world sell things we don't need e.g Apple, Porsche yet the companies that sell essentials often suffer from the very fact they provide commodities.

During hard times people spend more money on the less expensive luxury items than they do on the expensive luxury items like holidays and sports cars. In a lot of towns you will find lots of shops springing up that offer low cost luxury items and services

People just love to spend money. we spend too much in general.
I have gone all over the UK in the last few months and all i can say is that it really does depend where you are. I have stayed in hotels and gone out to find dozens of restaurants have packed up in the last two years and in other places it is all booming. Have just got back from spain. same thing total boom and everything lovely in Barcelona everyone employed but a national average of 20%. people are suffering but in pockets.

To be honest, i was made redundant last year. I was an account manager and got a job with 1 of my accounts lined up and another 2 offers before i had even left.
I then left that job because i didnt get on with the bloke as my boss so went self employed. I could have gone and worked for one of the other 2 offers i had but decided to go self employed. dont get me wrong its hard work and im not doing as well as if i had an employed position but im ticking over.
All of my mates are in jobs (within the financial services too) and theyre doing fine.
However, my family owned a pub, which was doing really well, that all went tits up because people were not coming in from around 2009ish. So it seems to be certain job sectors that are struggling, i dont think its everywhere.
Also as has been said, people are cutting back but. I used to go to town every week, i now go to the local village where there are bars or if its a really hard week just to my local where i can spend maybe £15 on a night out rather than the £40-50+ i used to spend in town.
Ive also cancelled my gym membership at a health club which had a pool (i never used) and joined my local council run gym which is half the price.
So its more to do with cutbacks and being more sensible with money rather than not spending at all...in my opinion.

At the risk of being berated this all sounds really wonderful - the UK can be filled with Mercedes driving yuppies who can afford to eat out. Everything may appear that it is doing well but then as Richie N says they are probably using plastic to finance it all.
I'm sure that somewhere some people are doing fine, but if you want a country filled with food chains, supermarkets and charity shops yes there is probably no recession at all. Hey Sirearl - any chance of loaning out one of those cars on buy now pay never terms???

The restaurants may be busy but it's not like that everywhere.
As for cash, they are probably using credit cards instead
Unsecured debt is currently declining in the UK.

Bet Mercedes dealers charge more for the glue than the car...better to stick it together with masking tape and paper clips...bit like a Ford.

Perhaps as has been mentioned people are scrapping the overseas holidays and spending money on days out here instead?
I don't know, only that yesterday it was packed in the shops I visited. Couldn't even get myself a big hammer to fix the fridge because of all the people trying to walk over me.

Clearly some folk have money to spend - and lots of it. I've just had by far my best month ever in the motorsport industry, and from what I hear from all my contacts, I reckon the sector is absolutely booming.
There's nothing more "non-essential" than motorsport, so what's going on I don't know, only that I'm making hay...

I've no doubt that low end earners are struggling but these are most likely the ones that borrowed more money than they could afford which got the country into this situation anyway.
The majority of my friends have a joint income of 80k and upwards and they're all spending as usual. I have a friend who is a sparky and he's heaving with work. I have a friend who is a top class builder and he's booked up until after christmas. I have another friend who is a plasterer and he has his diary full for the next three months.......we've had our best two years in the recession and grew approx 40% every year previous to that. I know several commercial airline pilots and they are doing good.

Bully for you Sir.
This time last year I was on £60k a year. Made redundant end of July 2011. Now I'm on part-time minimum wage work and benefits.
First offer of work outside this country and I'm off.
Rich are getting richer and everyone else can eff off it seems.

Swings and roundabouts. I think the main point is to be positive and ignore the press. They're doom mongers and things are bad but it really is not the apocalypse.
There was an engineering company on tv last week and they had a simple message, the work is out there just grow and diversify to meet the needs of your client base, simples.

Its interesting to see the attitude of the I am alright brigade compared to the guy who has been made redundant and is about to lose his home and still has to care for his wife and 3 kids?

it's not about that, it's about trying to remain positive as this will help in the search for a way out of a bad situation.
being negative won't help at all..don't you remember my posts from a few months ago where i couldn't sell anything at all, no interest, no sales, no money and everyone saying i was being too negative??
there is still money out there its about growing and adapting your offering. it's a tough situation at the moment but the key thing is not to end up in the thought gutter and try to search out new opportunities wherever they are!
