I've seen a couple of postings about this type of phone, so I tried googling it, but I'm sorry I did, as I'm none the wiser!

I went on to Amazon to see if I could find one which I did, but I'm still confused!

Is this type of phone on contract, pay as you go or what? How do you pay for your phone calls for it seems to be sim free, so I'm confused! Do you have to insert your own sim card in it?

I'd appreciate it if somebody could explain as it's lost me!

Android is an operating system which runs on a number of mobile phones. The same way you can run Windows on a varitey of different laptops (HP, DELL etc).

And just like windows there are various versions of android and they are all named after food, 2.3 (froyo), 3.0 (honeycomb) and 4.0 (ice cream sandwich/ICS).

The more modern the phone the later version of android they will run, the current generation like the Galaxy s3 and HTC One run android 4 but some of the older ones can be upgraded to later versions.

They work in the same way as any mobile phone, you have to get a Sim card in order to make calls and most of them also let you connect to a wifi network for faster web browsing, very handy for when you are somewhere with no mobile signal.

Android is the main competitor to Apple's Iphone (which run their own operating system called iOS) and just like with Iphone there is a market where you can download apps.

If you are looking for a contract get one which offers a lot of data as if you are going to use your android device to go on the internet, use facebook etc then this soon adds up.

Personally I would look at Three as they have the best data network in the UK, but signal can be a bit of an issue if you aren't in a major city.

You need to learn how to Google! How can you possibly have googled it and not found out everything you could possibly need to know about it?

Literally the first result on Google for 'Android'

Android
www.android.com/ShareOfficial site provides information for users, developers and partners. Includes press releases, videos, screenshots and downloads.

And the next result is Wikipedia which explains in very basic terms what it is, the first sentence is:

"Android is a Linux-based operating system for mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet computers. It is developed by the Open Handset Alliance, led by Google."

If you really needed help to find and understand the above then you don't want an Android device, you're almost certainly an iPhone person...
