What holds you back?

Hey guys, I’ve been building a coaching business to help entrepreneurs over the past month, but have continually run into the same question. As an entrepreneur, what emotions or behaviors do you feel are holding you back from achieving your dream life?

I’m not an entrepreneur so not your target client. Not got anything holding me back running a business and living the dream life.

So what was the question you kept running into?

Just my perspective and not trying to upset anyone, but I would only be interested in listening to someone who had actually done what I would be trying to achieve. There seems to be gurus and coaches everywhere these days, and most have never actually done much in the real world.

I actually don't like the word entrepreneur but putting that aside for a moment, I really don't believe you can be coached / trained to become an entrepreneur you either have that drive or you don't, successfully people in my book never say "i can't do this or that" they don't believe in barriers, don't procrastinate, have self belief and drive.

As far as coaching goes in my book its about offering courses which may appeal to those who want to increase their expertise / knowledge in the fields they are working in, that might be better report writing through to dealing with the press

I will tell you what holds me back

    The sunny weather
    Sitting in the garden
    The pub
    The lovely eating houses
Going on holiday to the Greek Islands
    Cars
    sport
    the list goes on

I'm more than happy with my life so why would I be dreaming about a different one and this forum is not for dreamers

I don't understand the question anyway and what's an entrepreneur

Putting the dreaded 'entrepreneur ' aside, I don't wholly agree with you.

Most (all) businesses have failings and weak areas - a good coach can help to recognise and address them.

From observation, I'd suggest that the most prolific failings by far are

    1. Focusing on doing the job, rather than running the business.

    2. Inability to delegate/outsource effectively

Although often they get muddled together, there is coaching and there is mentoring.

I good coach can coach an Olympic athlete to be better that a sport but that coach doesn't need to be able to compete in that sport themselves. A mentor however would, or at the very least would have been at the top of their game in years gone by.
I coach and I mentor, and my approach to each is different. I would never pertain to be an expert to mentor someone in sport, I can barely run a bath let alone a marathon :)

However, I'm not a fan of coach franchises and such, and wouldn't use one myself. I do however have a business coach not that we refer to him as one, he's my Chairman and original investor in the business and has a proven successful business track history. Having a coach can be good for you.

    Hey @Jack Riley

As a business owner, I think what holds me back a little is being over cautious on productivity. I am always looking at productivity that sometimes it can eat into my productivity, if that makes sense?

Otherwise I think I have a good handle on my business and the clients I serve. I am living my dream, travelling with my business and attending also every single social event I'm invited to. I wasn't able to do this when I was employed. I'm earning a lot more than I was when I was employed, but I would trade money for time any day of the week.

I mean to reply last week, however .....

I think procrastination is my issue.

"Nostalgia isn't what it used to be!" Peter de Vries, 1959, New Yorker Magazine.

"It’s like déjà vu all over again!" Yogi Berra - sometime in the 60s. He also said "The future ain’t what it used to be."

Berra claimed that he could not remember saying most the dozens and dozens of quotes ascribed to him - "I never said most of the things I said."

I am starting my second business. The first ran into funding issues but will be restarted in the coming years. Right now, I am trying to use my expertise and experience to help others who might be struggling with mindset issues, like I use to.

Fair enough. How many clients have you coached so far, and how measurable were the results?

BTW, there are no right or wrong answers, just yours. Everyone starts somewhere.

I have coached no paid clients. I am still in the research phase of the business, to find if there is a place for me to provide value with my expertise and experiences. I have helped people with mindset issues in an unofficial setting, so I am trying to find a position where I can provide value.

I really thing you should have asked a different question. Talking about coaching entrepreneurs is a bit of a stretch for someone with your experience. Even on a 'help getting people past psychological hurdles' level, you need a lived experience and solutions to a range of problems.

The question you should be asking:

I'd like to start a business. I think I can help people who want to succeed in business, overcome some of the mindset roadblocks they may be experiencing. Here are some of the problems I've managed to get past myself:
    1. Fear of failure
    2. Procrastination
    3. Stress management
    4. Self-talk/self-confidence
Is there an opportunity for this type of service and how should I position myself to best capture that market? What would you add to this list?

If you have the solutions, you have something valuable to pass on. If you don't, then you need keep learning.

I’ve obviously never met you, but at what I would perceive to be your age group I think you will struggle to gain clients simply because you have such limited life experience. I mean no harm in that statement, but most people make judgements within five to ten seconds in general.

I hope I am wrong and maybe you have the character to pull it off, but I would suggest getting a bigger track record by maybe doing some voluntary work so you can make some firmer claims, rather than just having helped yourself.

What I would say, is if marketed well, this could be a lucrative market.

I appreciate the advice. I'm still learning how best to engage my audience and this gave me some great tips so I appreciate it.

I agree. I think my age is a factor that will limit my ability to pull in a group of clients, but I also think that as long as I am able to provide value to people, I can grow this steadily over the next few years. I am not expecting to be able to go full-time with this in the next 6 months, but it will give me a good base to build something that can help others as I work through school. I appreciate the feedback!
