web design software

Hi..

Looking for a web design software that is more or less free, either on line or as a download. I am looking to create a simple page other than using MS Word because on my MAC the drop-down menus do not all function in MS Word and this is the second time this has occurred.

Christmas not celebrated on 25th here in Georgia so want to keep busy because my staff in the UK are not replying to their emails (now, why arent they working...

I have tried Joolma but its in PHP and noticed the installation is not too easy for the novice. Would consider a Win2003 server based blogger that I can install on my server. Its for a personal website.

How simple a page? I could do it for you if you don't want it to look any good, but it will be valid XHTML/CSS, WC3 compliant and all that jazz.

By that I mean for free, as designers are naturally away enjoying themselves.

Been searching for something like this for ages. A couple of possibilities:-

but might not meet your needs. It always surprises me that such software is hard to find.

No, really. I'm not a designer. I could build the website, but if he wanted it to look professional etc, I'm not the guy for the job. My company on the other hand, but I can't do that for free.

Have a look on www.downloads.com I am sure it has a list of free webdesign applications - alternatively you can buy dreamweaver mx which I use to create pages quickly.

Tom has been absolutely fab...have seen a draft to date. I was expecting to send a lamb to slaughter but no, the design is GOOD...and I mean good. Will keep you all posted.

DarrenC - did go to download.com - most software for MAC OSX - afraid Im in the stone-ages with the 9.1. Planning to get a new MAC with the latest and MAY buy Dreamweaver MX but then again, may just leave the web work to the professionals.

Darren, what confused you? I always worry when people see I own a web design company and I quickly admit I can't design. I just hope they then look at the website and realise I have designers!

I guess it said to me that you say you have designers but actually they are not salaried because it would cost to use them.

So they are not someone you can just allocate a project and tell them to do it - rather you ask them to do it, they quote you and then you bill your client and you pay the 3rd party designer.

It's just my observations on what you've said in the thread so far - I may be totally wrong - it's just feedback on how people may be confused.

Oh, no. No assumptions there. That's completely true. I can't quite come to spending £60,000 a year on two designers salaries just yet(!), but want to keep 2 designers of their quality because of the variety and final product.

I just didn't get that impression from the post, cos even if they were employed, it'd be pretty bizarre to do it for free on companies time. I have no problem giving my own time for small things, but thought I'd make it clear that I'm a web developer, not a designer.

I just assumed Darren was confused by me commenting on me saying it wouldn't look any good.
