W3 validator (what is it?)& google maps help

Hi all just ran my site through w3 validator and got loads of errors and things!

Please don't slate my site to much I've done the best I can with out no experience,as I'm a tradesmen with a diy site and not a lot of funds to spend on professional web design company.

I'm trying climb google maps page 9 to page 1 in carpenters in London to no avail,any tips would be appreciated.

W3 Validation is good but not the end of the world, It just means there are errors in your code or, it doesn't meet certain conventions. I wouldn't stress too much.

Agree, looking at the list there is nothing in it you need to be overly concerned about. Try using firefox with the 'html tidy' extension - it not only checks for errors but will offer a fix as well.

Google maps.....I'll let the experts answer that one as it's dragon territory.

Just quickly.
Remove ampersand and brackets
set your address correctly
currently your listing will list you under "decorator services london"
List what you want to be found under.
people are more likely to search "carpenters london" or "joiners london" than "carpentry london"

Disagree with the "joiners london" - I was a Bench Joiner for 16 years and still people didn't know what I did. Joiners are the cream of the trade

I would stick with carpenters, maintenance, odd jobs, small works, wood, bespoke furniture/carpentry, roofs, doors, windows kinds of things.

Better still would be to look at your Google Analytic results (providing you have it?) and see what people are using/searching on to get to your site.

what it 'htmltidy' I don't know much about it!

OK here we go. Download firefox and install.

Then go here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/249

Download and install. Start firefox and you might get an upgrade messge, ignore and continue.

Go to your site and when the page has fully loaded press Ctrl+U or go to view/page source. A new window will open showing you the code. The errors and warnings are listed in the bottom left. Bottom right are the fix-it suggestions.

In the menu got to html validator/clean up the page and it will fix as much as it can. All you then need to do is copy and paste into your editior.

W3C compliance aims to ensure that site displays properly, especially with regard to partially sighted end users, and also for when it is displayed on a mobile phone, and in different browsers.

There was talk a while ago about making it a legal requirement on sites so that disabled users were not disadvantaged, but I don't think that has been implemented yet.

Its not something you need to worry about.

Valid code shows that the person who built the site knows what they are doing. It also generally means that the site will display correctly across most browsers. As you are a beginner you do not need to worry about it.

A sitemap ensures that search engines find every page that you want them to find. It allows you to specify how often you want search engines to check for changes etc.

This may help you make a sitemap.
