VoIP and SIP - building a phone system using software phones

Currently, I have three SIM cards for various uses in my business. I pay £5 a month per SIM card for a minor 30-day rolling contract, but it is now getting silly dealing with the different mobile phones and the associated SIM cards. I want to move all the numbers on the SIM cards to a VoIP / SIP provider in the UK. I want a software SIP phone that I can use on my desktop Mac, laptop Mac, and iPhone.

In short, I want to get rid of my reliance on SIM cards. Is there a provider for something like this that I can investigate? Are there any providers that offer advice on your situation and recommend products that would be suitable?

Does anyone have any advice at all? Is there any decent macOS and iOS software available?

A VOIP/SIP phone relies on access to the internet - will you always have access to a wifi network? If not, you will still need a SIM to get 4g/5g mobile coverage when out and about.

I was under the impression you could set VoIP up so that you can redirect calls if you are not in the office? I don't mind paying for one SIM card with a high data contract to handle calls when not on a WiFi network but at the moment it is getting crazy. I have three business SIM cards and one personal SIM card so that means I need to carry two phones which I hate doing.

Write a brief of what you exactly want.

There are many options open to you, from setting up your own VoIP server to going fully managed.

There are lots of ways of doing what you want to do using VoIP. But to get the best for you we'd need to know how you work and what you actually need. If you give us a call - 020 7043 5555 - and talk it through with the tech support people we can work out what's best. They're support not sales - we don't have sales people - they'll give you straight answers.

Thank you very much for your reply. I'll get in contact and see what we can come up with.

    Hey Kerwin,

We have a couple of options which not many companies offer:

    • We can integrate VoIP with Microsoft Teams, this means you can use your number and call through Microsoft Teams (you'll need a headset).
    • We have a SIM offering that directly plugs into our VoIP system, it means you don't need data and can still make calls with all the benefits on a VoIP system, recorded calls etc! You can call from your mobile or Landline number!
    Happy to chat further.
