Paddy: Have you done us a packed lunch?
Max: Have I.
[Opens package to reveal a gun] P
Paddy:What's that?
Max: That my friend, is a Broomhandle Mauser.
Paddy: I'm not using that...
Max: Why, what's wrong with it?
Paddy: It's an antique that's what it is.
Max: It's not an antique. There's nowt wrong with that. It was me Grandad's. He shot a German with this.
Paddy:What, in the War?
Max: No, in Benidorm. He had a fight over a sun lounger

Power By Numbers
How nice would it be if this service existed?

Once you've made your 50th post, you're given "ACCESS".

Those with access can click +1 or -1 (or something along those lines).

When a person submits a Thread/Reply, the reply is automatically given 0 points.

When those reading the thread/reply dislike what they see, they -1 it, or if it's good, +1 it.

When a thread reaches the threshold (say in this case minus 10 (-10)) the reply message is automatically minimised as default.

An example can be found by visiting Digg.com and reading the comments of a post.

Careful though... they don't use *'s to hide the naughty words over there!

I think it would need to be a combination of time and posts - what the figures should be i couldn't say but posts alone don't show forum community stickaroundability.

Exactly. Those who qualify for the "community" badge, get to wear the "Community Elder" logo. They then have the ability to upgrade by one "point" of a post/thread, or downgrade by one point.

Eventually, once X amount of Elders have read that thread, the thread will automatically disappear (it will still be available if you click on it to restore it's size). But by default, it'll be minimized and out of the way.

I don't get his bit? Could you explain a bit further.

For example, say your post "I don't get this bit" was rubbish/offensive, etc.

the community would mark it down. Once it reached -X points, rather than showing the message and thread, you would just see the blue bar with your name, the score, and a link to make it "restore" to normal size again.

I've been around her long enough to remember when it was all fields and so naturally seen a lot of changes but yesterday I saw a series of events on the forum that really made me sad and a little angry:

1) Welcome post:
On a very nice introductory post the first 2 replies were people just trying to flog stuff to the person who was being introduced then later an admin posted and didn't comment on the fact that welcome forum is for welcoming? So is it now a free for all for us to 'get in there' and bombard with our wares to every new member who seeks to be part of the community here?

This is nothing new as even in the days of open fields there used to be a queue of people posting nothing more than "Welcome to the forum" which a cynic would say was just to give Google another signature link to spider.

There even used to be one chap who greeted everyone with "If you want a switchboard please contact me" and he had a postcount in the hundreds generated by doing this.
