Trade partner from Nigeria

Hello,

I am wine exporter, and I have experience in this job. I already have successful partnerships with wine importers, all in EU countries.

These days, I received a offer for a cooperation from one entrepreneur from Nigeria. He said that he has chances to import wine in his country. My wines and prices are interesting for him, and he wants to sent him a samples from my wines.

But I am not sure about this cooperation (I am hesitating) because I don`t know the Nigerian market. Especially because some of my colleague (also in wine business) have very negative impacts about the countries from Africa. They said to me that I should not accept this offer for cooperation. Also, last year I was in communication with one entrepreneur, also from Africa, and I can`t say that my impacts are very positive.

I always with my trading partners am following this policy: I am paying for the samples, they are paying for the transport. This entrepreneur is ready to pay for the transport. This is telling us that they are some chances for successful cooperation.

I would like to, If anyone has some business relations with Nigeria, to tell me his opinion about this cooperation. Should I accept this or not?

I am not making any discrimination, I am just noticing the impacts in my country from Africa.

Thanks.

Have you googled the company?

My opinion is if your sending them some samples you might as well send me some, the chances are slim for it to be genuine enquiry.

How much are they asking for, and whats the normal amount?

For now, I have not received any amount. They are some questions about how many bottles are in one 20` container, but, this does not means that this will be the amount that I need to export in the future.

As I understand, you don`t agree with my policy I to pay for the samples, and the importer for the transportation. I am using this technique many years, and it is OK for now. Please tell me your opinion about it.

One common trick is to make a payment with a fraud credit card and arrange for the goods to be transfered to a shipping company for imediate shipping, by the time you have the chargeback the goods are out of the country

I did spend quite a few years in Nigeria and Cameroon and must say the French had most of the supermarket and hotel suplied tied up and not a big market anyway

For anywhere apart from the scam capital of the world.

If they want 1 box as a sample maybe (how many bottles do you need for a sample), if the want a container for a sample thats taking the piss.

You can even be scammed by the payment to you for the transport. To be honest, too much risk and worry factor with Nigeria.

We deal with Nigeria on a regular basis, please do not judge everyone as a rouge trader there. I would suggest doing a little homework on the partner, if they have nothing to hide they will provide trade ref's and be willing to pay all or part of the funds up front.

There are many steps you can take to prevent fraud.

I think I will judge them on my experience of them if you don't mind.

I get email on a daily basis from Nigerians trying to scam me out of money. Their government needs to wake up to the fact that so many of their low life citizens are doing untold damage to their economy by being involved in these scams. Their government has made Nigeria a dirty word throughout the business world. They have known about it for years and done nothing.

I don't mind at all. Whilst there are a lot of scammers out there trying their best to rip people off, there are also some very honest and trustworthy people too.

I'm sorry to hear your experience has not been a nice one.

It's not my personal experience that matters Graeme. Nigeria has become a dirty word in the worldwide business community because of the factors I mentioned before.

Clearly there are many honest people in Nigeria but in business communication and promotion they are being overwhelmingly outnumbered by the crooks who send out millions of scam emails on a daily basis. I would guess that during the last ten years only about one email in a thousand that we have had from Nigeria has been anything other than a scam. With statistics like this it is just not worth taking a chance.
