Tracking phone call sales from website copy

Hi all,

We've created website copy for a business selling automotive equipment and have agreed to take a percentage of all sales generated through the website over a 12 month period. We can use analytics and forms to track direct sales through the site but aren't sure about telephone contacts.

We're currently exploring options for how we can track these sales alongside organic traffic through other channels. The business owner recieves phone traffic via referrals, socials and through partner businesses that all generate sales.

We've looked into software for dynamic number insertion but it comes a price we're not currently in a positon to pay.

Any suggestions or experience would be greatly welcomed.

You can’t track the source of all calls. You can’t even track all sales made via the website and other channels.

All you will ever get is a rough estimate of the total.

I used to own shares in a company setup by someone I know that did this, it’s used by a lot of the companies you will see advertise in service stations to track sales from billboards and such ads.
The company is CallTracks, have a chat with them. It does rely on the call handler pressing a number on the phone to confirm a sale after the call if I remember correctly but get a demo.

You put a form on your site that offers free call back or free call forwarding, but they need to enter their basic details e.g. name, their number.

On the call forwarding, they enter number, system calls them and then forwards call to your client. On call back, you just pass the lead to your client.

Unless your phone number is listed in directories, on your website, social media and other resources. All of which means you won’t be tracking anything.

CallTracks is a useful tool but it’s not cheap.

You'd be surprised about people using obvious contact details to make contact!

I had someone moan to me at one of my events over the weekend about how they could not get hold of me/office - I suggested that if the could not get an answer r from the office phone, the listed mobile, text, Whatsapp, FB page & Messenger might help!

Doesn't Colin (@cjd ) have a some code you put on your site to offer call backs?

The messy problem of attribution. I've seen a imperfect solution to this but every solution is messy and won't be comprehensive.

So at the end of each sale or beginning of each enquiry, the customer completes a 'tick box' query. They're given a list of 'how did you find us,' and they have to tick one box.

You can even extrapolate this to cover all sales in case only 10% of customers complete it.

Where it gets super messy is you'll need a box to say 'multiple.' Because the reality of buying is customers engage with multiple touchpoints (an ad, video, website etc...) so you'll need to work this out.

Sure, it's not perfect. Sure, it's not ideal. But it's the best I've seen in my experience.

Quite a difficult one! Maybe create a 5% discount offer code, and purchase a Twilio number with a re-direct to the actual business number. Then you can display the Twilio number on the page and track all code usage and calls?

Tracking clicks of the phone number is easy to do in Google Analytics.
But what if they don’t click (dial directly) or use a number in an email or some other website. Or do as many do and block analytics cookies.

It's certainly a strange arrangement that you are paid on a commission by results basis for writing web copy and that the company are willing to pay you for all sales generated however they may be generated.

The process for tracking sales is something you should have agreed with the client as part of your contract rather than trying to retro fit solutions after you've already provided the service.
