To PayPal or not to PayPal

Hi All,

We get fairly good rates from our merchant 1.1% and PayPal keep hastling me to add them to my sagepay, but with rates of anything up to 3.4% + 20p I don't see why I should give away such a huge amount of my profit.

Has anyone on here seen a HUGE increase in customers when they started accepting paypal?

Our average order is £160 and at 2% more that would equate to £3.20 lost per order. We already have to subsidise shipping and with over 1000 orders in our busy period this could soon add up to an extra £3000+

Paypal will negotiate rates if you have enough money going through. If they are hassling you to sign up I presume you have a direct contact with them.

Why not ask them what they are prepared to do to win your business?

They've just offered me 1.4% + 20p fixed for 3 months.

Far better than they originally offered and apparently their lowest rate.

WOW, really? That's amazing. Can anyone just call and get those kinds of rates?

Mind you, if the money isn't going through, I imagine those rates would shift pretty quickly...

Anyone can get them when they hit £55k+ per month.

They will be offering that based on potential turnover then rates will fall to whatever merchant rate you qualify for.

Personally I would leave PayPal as a secondary payment option. It increased our business by about 10% a few years ago when we added it as a second payment and we put a fair chunk of cash through them. I wouldn't use them for all our payments though.

Hi,

Do you have a direct contact at Paypal by any chance?

I find their contact forms and modes of contact slightly poor to say the least!

Cheers

That's because they really don't want anyone to contact them...

I find PayPal to be incredibly expensive, and sadly, since adding a vastly cheaper VISA option, customers continue to favour PayPal.

I'm considering removing it altogether as most customers pay with a debit card anyway and it's just so expensive (especially on high price items).
