site traffic distribution seems odd

About a month ago I launched a small website, and implemented an adwords campaign. The campaign is set for global distribution.
This resulted in an immediate increase in the number of hits.

However, when I use Awstats to view the log data the distribution of vistors seems odd.
For the month of August, so far, the top five visitors are, by hit:
India 13099
UK 4108 (probably mostly me working on site content)
US 832
Pakistan 435
Sri Lanka 267

Can anyone advise how to interpret this apparent concentration of visitors from the Indian sub-continent?
Im assuming Awstats is OK.

without knowing the site content it is difficult to answer - have you got google analytics set up too?

doesnt adwords tell you where your visitors come from?

The site is an attempt to monetise some of my digital art, as ecards and desktop wallpaper.
There is nothing there that is particulalry aimed at the Indian market.
My simple adwords campaign uses one keyword "ecards" and one ad.

Mr Google tells me that August is a holy month for Hindus, which might have some significance.

Im taking baby steps, so I have not implemented Google Analytics yet.

If adwords has info about visitors' place of origin I cant find it.
The search terms reported by awstats and adwords make sense in terms of my site content. eg birthday, greeting, card etc. Nothing particulalry "indian".

Perhaps it is just a quirk. And I will have to wait for the rest of the world to find me.

Is there any other info in your logs that suggest strange behaviour? e.g. are your average page viewing times abnormally short?

Also, have a look through your referring pages in AWStat, see if there's any major indian traffic sources.

Hope this helps:)

You are wasting your money using adwords for India etc. It is hotbed of scammers and fraud.

Unless of course you are planning on doing a lot of legit trade there, I would concentrate on other areas.

Im not targeting India. My adwords campaign is set to global. Which is why Im curious that I get so many hits from India

I manage the adwords campaign. It is very simple comprising one keyword and one ad so far.

There are some robot hits and some visits <30s, but these cannot account for all the hits from India.
The site with most referrals is in.peeplo.com/search
I cant find much info about that, I assume the "in" prefix indicates an Indian localisation.

Thanks for your thoughts

Well Indian teenagers are very fond of wallpapers, Ecards etc.

The festival period is going to start from next month and will be there till November.

And if your adwords are displayed on Orkut and Facebook then the no. of visits you have from india is less as what I think

you might want to try google analytics instead. if you also have an account set up i can take a look for you for free. all you have to do is ad the person with read-only access.
