When selecting a web designer, do you prefer those companies that list their prices, for example in set packages (with the option of aditional extras) or prefer those that simply have a request a quote function and show no prices at all?

I prefer to use the web designer that has prices on the site but don't mind paying for extras as long as I know about them before hand.

I would be interested to find out peoples opinions of this as we run are a security installer business but don't list prices as the prices can change from installation to installation and people could hold us to this "put your website says this and you are trying to charge me this!"

But then there are lots of websites the same industry that do.

Would be good to see if that would change customers opinions.

Thanks bobby, so you would find it better if it listed a basic starting price and had a simple explination saying additional features available at extra cost?

Yes I would -the other benefit is that you are price conditioning your customers of what to expect, rules out a lot of time-wasters who have no idea of the real
costs involved.

Also from a psycholical point of view - if your customer is price conditioned at say £5k and the actual cost is say £6k you've only got a £1k sale to make, because they already bought at £5k

At the end of the day, you should never be ashamed of your prices and if you can give a guide price then your customers will appreciate this.

I went to a website designer once that was recommended by someone and his opening gambit was "Our strap-line is Reassuring expensive"
and they were but to be fair their work was absolutely phenomenal.
Never did use them but I have referred a few people to them.:)

we list our standard costs and explain whats covered etc and find it does help as people know what to expect before they phone up.
i much prefer this approach as its what i prefer to see myself when looking online.

Thanks guys, so listing costs seems to be favourable.
Im just trying to find the balance between listing costs for basic packages and those who want a custom solution.

Would anyone find it confusing or off-puttng if something said like 5 pages from £99 and in a sentence underneath, something about additional extras / customising the package ?

I won't contact anyone who doesn't give any indication of price on their website.

Just yesterday I was looking a email marketing services as I had been recommended a particular supplier. All I wanted to know was how much per month to send x thousand emails per month - not a single price in their site, result? I moved on and decided to stick with my current provider.

I agree however if you force people to contact you you have a better chance at conversion but how many prospects will you lose by not giving example prices?

I go with "Post Your Quote" option websites. Because good companies first analyze your requirements and resources and then decide actual cost of your project.

Totally disagree with this, I would be very concerned at someone quoting for a job without discussing it with me first - you can't collect all the required info on an online form. ( if you could I'd probably loose the will to live having to provide all the info via an online form )

Well, to give an opposing view, we don't advertise prices.

The reason behind this is that we are more expensive than (most of) our competitors - because we provide a bespoke service (we're not just message takers) - and therefore if people came to our site just to price match with others we would lose prospective new clients.

Of course we might be losing sales by not having the prices on, but usually people call or email with questions about the service, etc., as well as asking about the price.

Thats a good point. I need to have a serious re-think about who my target customer is.

Surely it helps businesses aswell - If a customer knows the prices before hand and they have got in touch - surely they are more interested in your service? I would have thought it got rid of timewasters.

From a customer point of view i like prices on the website - I dont want to go to the hassle of contacting to find out prices unless its a specific service where prices vary for all different businesses/customers
