Dear All,

Would really appreciate your feedback on the following. Our company will be offering a service to restaurants to help build them a customer database. Part of the service is where we provide table cards with numbers to which the customer SMS a keyword, this enables them to be added to the restaurant's list

Do you think customers would prefer to SMS to a shortcode or would a conventional UK mobile number be better, any views?

It's gotta be short code for me. Looks more professional. Just be sure that it doesn't cost £1.50 per text!

I'm not even sure what the deal is. I'm sat in the restaurant have a meal and I assume I can send a text to be added to a mailing list.

Why do I need a card to do this? Surely they should be multiple means of getting deals: email, SMS, mailshots, telemarketing.

I think the OP just means an advertising card on the table with the text number on and presumably details of the loyalty scheme to encourage people to join. Read the card, decide you'd like to join, send a text, job done.

Yes he is talking about Table Tops.

The plastic thing that holds a small flyer type thing.

So it will say text VIP CLUB TO 12345 to get a free pudding and show your phone to the waitress before you order it.

You will get a return text/coupon to show VIP MEMEBER.

You need to show the usual legal stuff in the print somewhere about STOP and what you are agreeing to.

Anyway the answer is short code.

Make sure the staff buy into it and I would even have them wearing Tee Shirts with the same message on. Make it a competition for the staff with bonuses.

Use the SMS to drive people to e-mail subscriptions and vice versa, but don't start bombarding people with texts and e-mails.

They will opt out in droves.

You can also see about getting the till redone so that the bottom of a receipt says TEXT VIP CLUB TO 12345

Really make sure the owner buys into what you are doing though otherwise the thing will die a death.

Have you done this yourself Dan?

I know if I saw anything with VIP CLUB on it I'd just ignore as my sceptical head would expect it to result in a rush of marketing rubbish.

Or I'd just join to get my free pudding and then text STOP 5 minutes later.

I haven't myself no but it works.

The message doesn't have to be VIP CLUB it can be PUDDING for example.

It can be anything.

There are many uses of SMS for businesses which can either save money or make money.

Hello,

A shortcode is much cleaner, but some people will be worried it may cost them to text in so you do need to stress this on your call to action (texts cost std network rate).

If you want a free one let me know (no strings attached.. just ask! ) :)

Hi Textlocal, are you serious? I was thinking of giving the option of a shortcode and a local mobile number; your point about adding a note on std text rates is excellent and well noted!!

Done... you will find it under your "inboxes"... you can set up any autoresponder you like, forward to email, server or your own mobile phone... and generate a QR code SMS (as above)

Ok.. 2 free SMS shortcodes still available to any UK business that wants one (usually £25 per month!) :-)

Just choose a WORD that your customers can text to 60777. You can then autorespond with a link to a website, or a link to a PDF brochure, or your contact information to store in their phone. At the same time you capture their mobile number to send future offers, news and info about your business via SMS or MMS.

Saxondale - how are you getting on with yours, have you displayed it to your customers yet, what are you planning to use it for?

I`m out of the country for the next two weeks so not a lot it till I get back, we sponsor an under 10`s football team and am thinking of doing something there.

I`ll also get it on the video wall and in the programmes for one of the Chesterfield home games we have allocated to us.
