If a limited company has multiple business trading names, how can I have sequential invoices numbers for the limited company as a whole? Do I even need to?
Each trding business has it's own website and as such there is no way for me to keep the invoice numbers sequential across the limited company. Can I just keep them sequential for each trading name?

Also, when I get an invoice from a supplier, do I have to have my limited company name on their invoice to be able to claim back the VAT? Can I get them to invoice me at Business A, rather than Limited company trading as Business A, and still claim back the VAT?

You can put whatever number you like on the invoice. They don't even need to be sequential.

Well, I know that's not true upon doing a bit more research. Record keeping (VAT Notice 700/21)
section 4.1 cleary says invoices need to have;
  • a sequential number based on one or more series which uniquely identifies the document
But can I have different sequential numbers for different trading businesses?

Can any-one else help that have a definitive answer/link?

Thank you.
The answer is in the extract that you've quoted.

A sequential number based on one or more series. So a separate series for each trading arm
Thank you for your help.

Are you able to help with the 2nd part of my question regarding claiming back VAT for a trading business? Do I have to have my limited company name on the suppliers invoice to be able to claim back the VAT? Can I get them to invoice me at Business A, rather than Limited company trading as Business A, and still claim back the VAT?

When you registered your company for VAT did you enter the trading names used on the VAT registration application?

Why not use sequential invoices numbers, but prefix them with a company indicator?
