Hello there. I am new to this forum. This question has probably been asked time and time again, but I just wanted to gain a general perspective:

What is your most effective SEO strategy for gaining high quality back links?

I am currently using content as my main strategy in combination with local directories and social media.

Has anyone got any advice?

Don't do what you are doing. The links aren't high quality and may even be hurting your ranking.

If you want high quality links you have to pay for them. Either by employing an expert or paying the site owner.

But surely if you are writing engaging content on your own website and blog page, then you will gain back links that way?

And I'm confused as to how local directories such as Google, Bing & Yelp & reaching out on social media can be detrimental?

Surely as a digital marketing company you should know this - it's what you offer your clients...

What value does your content provide your potential customers? If it's valuable, people will visit and may link back.

Engaging is not the same as valuable.

Hi Nick,

Your completely right, and the SEO services we offer have been achieving great results.

But there is no harm in trying to better yourself at something which is why i asked an open question.

Only very rarely. They are good links but they aren't easy to get. Unless you offer something to the person linking to you.

Because they are links YOU have created. Their value is zero and submitting endlessly to directories is frowned upon by Google. Social media links are no-follow so unless there is further sharing you might as well stop doing it.

The same off page strategy I stated in my intro post as well as making sure my on-page optimisation was spot on. I didn't come here to get belittled if thats what you are trying to do...

Not sure why you think I'm belittling you, it's not my intention.

That's why I answered your question.

Our best pages - from an SEO pov provide information that either can't be found elsewhere or is hard to find in a simple, easy to use/find format.

They rank top 5 for a range of phrases and have a clickthru ratio of between 20 and 80% which is pretty good.

They also last, content is months or years old but still ranks high.

Taking an awesome piece of content and making it more awesome, then outreaching to others who have shared and linked back to this content, works pretty damn well. Also building great relationships with influencers.

You'll probably find this manual method of reaching out for link building will become more popular during 2015. Remember, value first, ask second.

It's always been popular and it's always worked well. But it only works if people quote and link back to you. Not from an SM site though, - the links need to come from respected and authorative sites. Just like they always have.

The google algorithms regarding your google ranking are always changing, make sure that you register for google webmaster tools. Really hope that helps someone in here.

Err. No they didn't.

That article doesn't even state what you claimed...

It's always going to be Google's ambition to progress to an algorithm that doesn't rely so heavily on links as a predominant ranking factor but realistically, that is neither going to happen any time soon, it at all, as it requires a flawless model to rely on instead which doesn't currently exist.

Hence the amount of research and testing they carry out which results papers like the one published last month (that the article does mention).
