I know this is question is probably asked often.

What are the basic steps and actions a non-technical person should take to increase web site SEO?

Thanks in advance

Agree with the above, SEO isn't really a "technical" thing, you don't have to be a programer or have a degree in IT to get some great results. That said it is a skill, you need to understand marketing techniques, conduct research, write well and understand your target market (both the search engines and your customers).

I'm in no way technical but I've got a number of sites on page one for popular two word terms like "ethnic jewellery" and "pet accessories"

keep in mind - there can only be (what is it?) 10 organic results on page one

SEO is all about luck, nothing more, nothing less

luck and very, very specific search terms - location, location, location

IMO SEO can be as technical as you want it to be but achieving good positions in search engines boils down to a few key things:

  1. Your website needs to be accessible to the search engine spiders so they can view all the content on your website.
  2. You need to fill your website with unique content.
  3. You need to get links to your website.
Each one of those points can get VERY technical but as a website/business owner points 2 and 3 can be done without any technical knowledge.

If you have spare money then it may be wise to pay a company to do SEO for you. If you don't have the money but are willing to put in some time then just get someone to take a quick look at your website and make sure its accessible to search engine spiders.

Then you just need to put some time into writing content for your website and getting people to link to your website (writing good content will encourage people to link to your information, commenting on relevent forum posts, commenting on blogs, getting your website listed in some directories should all increase your websites exposure and help it gain more links).

Write some content, find some links, write some content and so on.

---

Your site is created in Wordpress so you should be able to add content easily.

You have the all in one seo plugin installed so use that to your advantage, each bit of content you have on there give a unique and descriptive title and description. The title and description will show up on the Google search result pages so be descriptive and let people know that your website provides what they are looking for. Currently your homepage title "Tandem Invoice Finance | Home" isn't quite as descriptive as it could be, it's one of the most important pages of your site.

I see one potential issue with your website; when I browse the site and go to click through to another page the address of that page says something like "?page_id=661" then when I click the link it redirects to a page of a different name "products-and-services/single-invoice-discounting/". Google seems to be dealing with this OK and is indexing your pages but It's a little messy and could lead to issues. Get your web designers to sort this out, Wordpress has permalink settings that take care of this without using redirects.

Hope that helps a little.

Thanks to all for your advice.

It seems once the site is optimised for the search engines, it's all down to intelligent marketing to generaly increase online presence and unique relevant content.

Simon - thanks for looking into my site - your advice is greatly appreciated.

SEO starts with good practice web development.

Sure, if you bang up your own sites powered by Wordpress then you may not need much technical nous.

However when you start working on and developing client websites written in .NET, PHP, ASP and so on there'll be times when on site work involves programming and technical expertise.

You are going to need to understand the basic principles before you can take the basic steps. Both for on-page and backlinks, and that's already are two bit of jargon that need to be understood.

There is a wealth of good information on this forum. It will take some searching and digging to find it, but there are some real gems, and posts that contain links to other good sources of information. It doesn't take long to work out who the knowledgeable posters are, and who is a waste of time.

With some knowledge of the basics, then those first few steps are not that difficult, provided whatever software you are using for your site will allow you to make the changes to various tags to get the on-page SEO optimised.

Ignore the BS about luck. There are some elements of luck, as much of SEO is an ongoing process of change something and then wait to see the results. With luck your change will have been positive, but sometimes it's not and you have to reverse out and wait again.

simples: Stick your soul and heart into it. It aint rocket science, it's methods. You need to learn which methods work best for you, which yield the best results and which you are going to spend the next 12 months, 8-12 hours a day working on. That wont be one method though but will be a mixture of techniques that work for you and a systematised approach to it.

Hobby SEO 101

Rule 1. You dont need to code, or learn to code. You have nothing to fear.
Rule 2. Onsite SEO, learn your keywords, headers, titles and meta monkeys. Place to good affect.
Rule 3. Learn what link building is, how to approach it and best methods. (trial and error) First rule of thumb though is this: Approach EVERYONE in your industry and try and get them to link to you, dont pay, but offer them a deal too good to be true (lifetime link from them if they link to you with your anchor text!) anything that sweetens the deal. 3 way links are king in my opinion, set up a sister site and link to people from that, and they return the link direct to your selling site.
Rule 4. Automated software - anything to make life easier, from ranking checkers to domain name finders. Google hates these programs, SEO enthusiasts cant stand the sight of them, but hell don't listen to them. Little bits of software here and there can help you. Anything from automating the process of finding relevant domains to simply checking your rankings on a daily basis. There are numerous excellent tools out there, just don't rely on them to do the SEO work for you, they are only time saving tools at most.
Rule 5. Patience - 6 weeks good seo work might bring in no results, failure might seem imminent and you are going bald from all the head scratching.. But do not fear! Google does all sorts of weird things and amongst them are simple things like analysing: How long has a link been valid for? How long has the host containing the link been valid for? Sandboxing the link. Calculating what sites link to the sites that contain the link and are there shared links between the 2 independent site, showing relevancy and if so.. Well who bloody knows. However sometimes it takes a long time to see the fruits of your work.
Rule 6. Any site worth a punt needs 12 months good SEO done on it to get it on top of it's game. If you are willing to put in the effort, then the site seems lively and Google notices and ranks accordingly. But it takes at least 12 months for a good SEO job to start showing "real" results, and by real i mean your site @ 150 visits per day to your site @ 1500 visits per day.

SEO aint complicated but it is something that needs learning and it amazes me how many people do not understand the fundamentals, but then again, i know sweet bugger all about astrology but i'm sure i could learn :D

Onsite SEO: Title, Header 1, Body, Header 2, Body. Regular Fresh Content
Off site SEO: Article marketing, relevant links, blog posts, profile links, directory links.
Time: All your bass belongs to us.

luck!!! you dont understand SEO. how complex it is depends on the site. Im guessing you havent really started on SEO yet as not even your titles are optimised. optimise the site keep it fresh and updated, add new content and get great backlinks.

it can get technical, watch where you get your links make the link building natural e.g. dont use just one keyword poitning to one page. spread the anchor text spread the pages your linking too. and check your links periodically.

thats a start oh and maybe get an expert to have a look even if it is just a chat about what you have done could be the best monmey you have spent.

Start with onsite SEO - the more technical issues concerned with your website - it's build, duplicate content issues, canonical issues, etc. Then move on to the more creative aspects - content, etc. Ensure you use social media well as that's becoming an ever more important signal too.

There's something on the web called The Web Developer's SEO Cheat Sheet, which many people I know use for guidance on the technical side of things (though there have been a few changes since that was published).

Hope that helps, Luke
