First I run a competitive link analysis and work out where the competitors are getting there links from.

To compete with the likes of TradeTang and the other Chinese wholesale sites you'd need a lot of cash or very clever SEO.. still I doubt you would get a head

It is not necessary where the competitors link available on that place you can also get the link easily. Most of the site owners like to get paid links.

Obviously by the results, and amount of pages these guys are targeting and getting page 1. It's not just the case of getting a few hundred/thousand links or whatever you may think to get ahead of these people?

That is the case, but if you want to live life copying others then go ahead, to get a head of anyone really they should be the ones copying you

Force users to write unique content / descriptions, too many just copy and paste putting duplicate content on every website.
