Its hard to rank keyword when its not included in content. However old school keywords repetition (5%, 10% etc) i no more appropriate. Don't be afraid of using keywords, nothing wrong with that. Instead of repeating keywords sequentially find out and use close synonyms.

Google can recognise synonyms - so for instance it would count these as similar 'auto insurance' , 'car insurance' 'automobile insurance'.

Ideally, you should not have a keyword ratio of over 1% for a particular keyword, including some semantic keywords naturally allows you to include related keywords and show Google what the content is about. As always use caution, write naturally and don't stuff.

Use of semantic keywords is not new but i think most people pay attention on using similar words in content after hummingbird algorithm. You can use related keywords in your blog post and it really helps in boosting your content ranking, but make sure don't overuse it. One great tool to find similar words is ubersuggest.io

Basically, semantic search is technology that tries to find the intent behind the generated query by the user. Its good to use semantic keywords because it helps to avoid keyword stuffing and Google counts it more.

The best method for increasing the keyword ranking is do backlink building with anchor text which will increase the traffic for your website and ranking for that particular keyword. Do Guest posting, Article syndication, Press release and social bookmarking, forums and blog commenting for backlink building.

I guess everyone is missing the point here.

Semantic search means 'meaning of the search'. Instead of showing keyword matching result, Google is trying to understand what is actually searched and how it is related to the webpage it is showing.

For example: if you are searching for 'breakfast', instead of showing images of breakfast, Google is showing restaurants which are serving breakfast near you. So if you are restaurant owner and you serve breakfast, it is important that you have a menu section for breakfast items.

So consider yourself a visitor, and try to understand what and why a visitor should come to your page and what extra information you may place on the webpage or a page linked to this page.

    All the best.

If your target keyword is "Plumber London" then use the keyword planner to find all the variations of that keyword and use them in your content on your optimized page, for example:

    1. Plumber London
    2. London Plumber
    3. Plumbers in London
    4. Plumber in London
    5. London Plumbing Companies
    6. Plumbing Companies London
    7. Best Plumber London
    8. etc

The more keywords you're stuffing into the page though the longer your content needs to be.

@Scott@KarmaContent hit it on the head.

From an SEO perspective, it's about working into key parts of the page, links, alts, etc, those words and phrases which are closely related to the target keyword phrase that you're trying to rank for initially.

To that end, the thesaurus and tools which show closely related terms, are what you'd be wanting to use to get those seed words.

The art of this comes in to play when you try to make a paragraph which uses several of these without sounding contrived.

Seo has gone through many changes as time progressing. People are developing new techniques to rank higher in SERP, so as Google do. There was a time when keyword density matters in SEO. Now Keyword density is invaluable even if it is used, may harm your SEO campaign. Now keyword density has been replaced by semantic keywords. You are free to use keywords in your content. But the game has changed, one cannot repeat the same keyword throughout content. Instead you need to add semantic keywords to fulfill the same purpose as it was with keyword density.

Semantic means bunch of closely related keywords. You need to distribute these keywords throughout your content. Let's understand semantic keywords with example. Suppose that I am searching for the "car". Now google has to understand on which context I am searching for "car". Some possible context may be that I am looking for:
    • Car - The Vehicle
    • Cars - The animation movie
    • The Cars - Music Band
Even though my main keyword is Car but the context may be different in different scenario. That's what exactly Google try to search while it fetches pages to display results. Now suppose that my context is related to vehicle, than all possible semantic keywords will be:
    • Buy Car
    • used car
    • buy used car
    • car repair
    • car dealers
    • car sell
Use of semantic keywords will definitely help to improve SEO as well as it bring more traffic to your website. Semantic keywords must go hand in hand with off page SEO promotion. Therefore if you are writing blog or article must include semantic keywords, for more visibility of your content.
