I'm just making out an invoice for my first sale to Ireland, just to check I understand right, if they are VAT registered, I supply the goods zero rated and they have to pay Irish VAT through their VAT return? Also i'm a bit unclear as to what I do if they are not VAT registered, do they pay the UK VAT?

Thanks in advance, as Ireland is so close I hadn't really though the consequences of selling there so i'm a bit unprepared.

My understanding is that if they are VAT registered, then yes, you supply them with the goods at a zero rate ... but, you must ensure that you have their VAT number on your invoice, and you will need to declare it on your ECSL.

If they are not VAT registered, then they will need to pay the UK VAT.

HTH ....

Hi,

When selling to the south of Ireland you do put it at zero VAT if they provide you with a valid VAT number. I use http://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/vies/ to check all of our VAT numbers. Just make sure all the details add up or when you declare it on your eurpoean sales you will end up having to pay the VAT yourself.

One thing to add is that you must actually send the goods to Ireland, and keep evidence of this. You can't just let somebody pick them up and claim to take them over to Ireland himself.
