I posted this in the ecommerce forum before noticing this board, anyway:

Does anyone know what the tax/duty due on products being sold into China. The best information I have seems to suggest:
VAT - 17.5%
Import duty - 17%

This is quite hefty! Any input much appreciated.

When importing goods into China it's not as simple as just paying the taxes and clearing customs.

There are many other issues you need to take into account before importing, some of which are the following:

1 - You need an import licence specific to the product you are importing.

2 - You need to have a selling licence in each province that you are looking to sell your products into.

3 - These licences only give you scope to trade in the provinces issued.

4 - Any food or beverage related products have a rigirous and stringent import schedule which incurs an estimated 25% onto your costs.

5 - Any baby or food related items must have government approval, with samples and certificates, before being issued with licences to import.

All these items must be looked at seriously and understood completely, before embarking on importing into China.
