Ravenfire

Well as from today I am officially a self-employed sole trader. I think thats what its called anyway. I have contacted the Inland Revenue who will apparently pass my details on to the tax office. Is there anything else I need to do?

I've also get my lovely digital transcription machine arriving tomorrow so if anyone needs some audio typing then Im you girl :D :D

Just out of interest, do you charge by the hour for transcription or by recorded minute?

From time to time we are asked to provide written translations of English court proceedings for foreign clients. The audio tapes have to be trasncribed first into Word before we can translate it.

How do your customers know you're not fibbing? I guess its just common sense that if you do fib customers might not be too happy and won't come back.

Good luck with it anyway, inland revenue can be a mild field but the self assesment forms are not too bad, just make sure you keep paper work for everything.

Hi. No different than if your mechanic charges you 2 hous for a service. We'd never know otherwise!! Also, who is going to charge someone for 51 minutes. Some wopuld round it up to an hour, some to an hour and a half!!

Most know how long it would normally take a secretary to type something so they would know if I was taking to long when billing them! No point in that as you would get any work from them in the future. As some of my work is copy typing they have to trust me.

And I spoke to the Inland Revenue today and it couldnt be easier!

As for typing, most companies agree by the hour or a set amount, well the ones I have come across anyway!

I use a free program called Time Stamp to record the hours I work for my clients - it's available from http://www.syntap.com/downloads.htm. It's possible to save each job and reopen it to continue the job. Many Virtual Assistants use this or some other software to provide their clients with a record of the hours spent on the project.

Many Virtual Assistants charge for audio transcription by the typing hour rather than audio hour. This is because many factors affect the work, including the quality of the recording, the clarity of accents, etc. As a general guide, it takes three to four typing hours to transcribe one audio hour.

That great thanks Lynn. Its the first time that I have done secretarial work at home so its all a learning curve and any useful help and advice is much appreciated.

I will download that today and definitely use it. I have been charging by the typing hour so far.
