Searching for web addresses, which then get reserved?

Somewhere on here I've read that if you search GoDaddy (or whoever) to see if your favoured web address is available to register, they will reserve it so they can flog it to you as they know you want it.

Sounds plausible and there was a workaround - maybe search on Nominet?

Some registrars do this. If I am not sure about a domain I try to ping it from the command line (any can do it. For example:
ping wibble.co.uk > Ping request could not find host wibble.co.uk. Please check the name and try again.

Quick follow-up - if I buy a domain name from a reseller, is it mine for good? Or is it just a licence from the reseller for a given time?

eg, if I wanted outdoorfox.co.uk from here (I don't...).

You can’t ever buy a domain name. All you get is a licence to use the name for a defined period of time.

And njalla has no .uk domains at all? Or have I missed something?
