Searching for web addresses, which then get reserved?

Somewhere on here I've read that if you search GoDaddy (or whoever) to see if your favoured web address is available to register, they will reserve it so they can flog it to you as they know you want it.

Sounds plausible and there was a workaround - maybe search on Nominet?

If anyone can refresh my memory, thanks.

Some registrars do this. If I am not sure about a domain I try to ping it from the command line (any can do it. For example:
ping wibble.co.uk > Ping request could not find host wibble.co.uk. Please check the name and try again.

You can’t ever buy a domain name. All you get is a licence to use the name for a defined period of time.

    Use namecheap.

If you want to evade the highest of law enforcement, use njalla.

Me and my people say F00CK YOU to all the internet registries who want to monopolize our innovation :D
    Why use namecheap?

And njalla has no .uk domains at all? Or have I missed something?

PS lolz Njalla is in Costa Rica. Even safer from US prying than Venezuela!
