SD Memory Cards?

Oki, im not one for the hardware lingo....

I have a Sanyo VPC-S500 - what i am trying to determine is which and what type of memory card i need to buy for it!

The camera takes SD Memory Cards - do these type of cards come in one size fits all or do i need to be a little more selective? am i correct in thinking you get two different sizes, the standard sd size and mini sd size?

I've found this site which has sd cards on... is this the sort of thing that im looking for? is there any reason for buying one brand over another?
 
Hi, be careful of cheap eBay memory as they can change the firmware and reband a small size card and it will appear to be say 4GB but is in fact 1GB and as a result only 1GB is usable! I recommend Sandisk! :)

Thanks adny, i have no intention of mucking around with ebay! Pricing for a 2GB seems around £12ish so theres no point as its such a minimal amount of money! Sandisk seem to have a good reputation...

Anyone know what the difference between the speeds as well as extreame 3 or ultra 2? obviously i presume they access faster... however will some work and others not? Come on you hardware gurus!

I can recommend mymemory - their prices are excellent, and if you click on the specs of each of their items, and scroll down you will see a full spec list including the speed - how quickly your camera will write to your card - this is really only important if you have a camera that takes chunky photos and you want to take multiple shots per second - your camers will have a cache but it will want to dump the data to your card as quickly as possible so that it doesn't fill up and prevent you taking the next shot.

They do their own label cards too, which I've had a problem with 1 out of 20 of (one card once) but I've also had one that was labelled 2gb that actually had 4gb capacity

OK, don't slate me for this but, I bought my last batch of Lexar SDHC cards from PC World. They were £29 each for a 4 Gb card.

As far as speed goes, Sandisk make the Extreme cards and they are up to version 4. Most card manufacturers cards will be around version 3 or 4. The higher the number, the faster the write speed. If your camera has an SD slot any SD card will work. For peace of mind I always use a good "name". Lexar, Sandisk, etc. Don't be tempted to buy cheap cards. Nowadays, with memory prices as low as they are, you can afford good reliable cards.

Yeah, chances are if its an older camera, it prob will only take 1gb...

1GB are cheap anways, so try it out, or see if you have a friend with a Bigger SD card.

aha..that was the other good thing about mymemory I forgot to mention - you can check what kind of card fits your equipment...

I'm not entirely aux fait with the technicalities but it's a common problem with hardware getting older that it won't be able to write to memory that is faster - I would trust this info - they are trying to prevent customer service issues for themselves, as under distance selling act they would be obliged to offer full refund to customers - and as you've pointed out already the cards are cheap and therefore the margins are slim and easily gobbled up by postage etc

expansys.com have real cheap. I had a 4gb for cheap however that is sdhc (high capacity) which i'm not sure will work with your cam. However, they're generally cheap for SD cards (their own brand with long warranties!!)

Actually i got the model number wrong, the one i have got is VPC not VCP as originally linked to in a previous post - its new so obviously hasn't been updated on the mymemory check site or something. Have checked the manual and it can take up to 4GB of sd memory.
