Consistency

I use this site a lot. I hate 0870 and 0845 etc and this site is a massive help. I will say though if you are looking for for example Tesco Worcester or Royal Mail cape hill, if there is one it can be really hard to find as they are not listed in order so we find ourselves running down a big long list. I have also contributed to this site and find it useful.

Depends what network or which provider you are calling from. it may cost the same on some packages but not from a virgin landline phone and not from an orange mobile

Reducing the cost of calls to 0870 numbers

Ofcom today set out new rules to provide clarity about the price of calls to 0870 numbers.
These new rules will encourage communications providers:
To stop charging higher prices for calls to 0870 numbers from fixed lines and mobiles than calls to “geographic rate” numbers (01, 02 or 03 numbers); and
To include 0870 calls in call packages on the same basis as geographic calls.
These measures may significantly reduce the cost of calling 0870 numbers whilst increasing consumers’ awareness about the costs of calling them.
    Clear advice on call costs

Under these new rules, communications providers that want to continue charging for 0870 calls at rates above those for geographic numbers will now be bound by strict rules about how prices are publicised on websites and in promotional material at point of sale.
Communications providers will be responsible for making sure their customers know how much they will be charged for calling an 0870 number and they will not be allowed to advertise 0870 numbers as “national rate” unless they are charging at geographic rates. If they do not comply with these rules, they could be subject to enforcement action including possible fines.
0870 numbers are used by many businesses and organisations to provide a wide range of information and advice including many customer service lines. Currently 0870 calls are priced at levels that enable businesses and organisations to share the revenue generated by per-minute call charges. Ofcom’s new rules should effectively end revenue sharing on 0870 numbers.
Ofcom welcomes steps that some fixed line companies have already taken to include calls to 0870 numbers in call packages and reduce their prices.
The new regulations will come into effect on 1 August 2009.
The statement on 0870 numbers can be found at:
    www.ofcom.org.uk/consult/condocs/0870calls/0870statement/
    Ends.

    NOTES FOR EDITORS
    1. Advice for consumers on 08 numbers can be found at: http://www.ofcom.org.uk/consumeradvice/landline/costofcalls/08faq/

If those bandits are charging above normal geographic prices and are not making it clear that they are - tell Ofcom. And if they are, complain anyway.

Easily the best thing about saynoto0870.com is the fact that you can avoid the crazy charges charged by mobile phone providers for calling non-geographic numbers.

In fact, if anyone knows of a mobile tariff that includes 0845/0870/0800 in the 'free minute' bundle then please let me know! I'm sure the first provider to do this will have thousands of frustrated people switch to them immediately!

We can help a little with 0800:

    Free 0800 calls for Mobiles

I’m sure you are aware that you can’t call an 0800 ‘freephone’ number for free using your mobile.
We think that’s wrong, so we thought about it for a while and have come up with a crafty way of making these calls for free – as they were originally designed to be.

    Is it really totally free?
Yes - if you have a contract mobile package with included minutes to UK geographic numbers like 01 and 02.
(Even if you use a Pay-as-you-go mobile it’s normally cheaper than calling the 0800 directly; but you need to check with your provider.)

    How does it work?
    1. Dial our access number 029 2000 0800 (add it to your address book)
    2. When we answer, just enter the 0800 number you want to call and wait to be connected.
    That’s it.

How can you do it for free?
We get a tiny fraction of a penny for the call from the network operator, not enough to matter but enough to cover our costs.
But we mostly do it simply because we can, because it's quite cool and because we think mobile phone pricing is a rip-off.

You’ll find more mobile phone workaround tricks here:

ps You don’t need to be a Voipfone customer to use this trick – tell your friends.

I guess you don't know what you have until it's gone ! :(
How did you support the service? Did you contribute financially or just use it for free?

These sort of sites often fail simply because the burden of keeping it going exceeds any benefits.

"These sort of sites" usually generate revenue through sponsors & advertisers. If it was a paid for service, the object of the site would be defeated. That is probably the reason they don't ask for donations (at least not that I can see).

Anyway, the website seems to be functional at present, which is great !
