Router Recommendations

I'm in the need for a new router, as mine has started playing up.

It must support both WiFi and 4x Ethernet ports. I use a Virgin Media cable modem so ADSL routers are no good to me.

Currently using a Linksys and I've used Belkin in the past I'd prefer to avoid both.

Any recommendations?

Netgear, can't remember the exact model number but they offer a cable wireless router...

Using one now with Virgin media cable modem and works very well...

I use a Linksys WRT54GS. For what I paid, it does the job.

Lets me route specific ports to specific computers... great for UltraVNC

No, thanks - I've saw a few people recommend this model. I'll see what everyone else has to recommend before I make a decision.

I have the Netgear wireless-g router, it has four ports and is very pretty looking (white).

I had a linksys wireless one prior to that and had loads of problems with it. Before that I had the netgear dg814 which was ace.

Netgear is the way forward

There really isn't a 'best' router atm - they're all average to poor.

The domestic Netgears and Linksys are ok. I don't like Belkin. Someone will tell you Draytek are good too (not a fan).

A nice colour is as good a reason for a choice as any.

Had no problems at all with my domestic Netgear (it is ADSL so cant recommend a specific model) but had all hosts of problems with the linksys one before

I know a couple of people who are using Netgear WGR614 and very happy with it. That model is the Cable Version, with Wireless and x4 Ethernet ports!

Pretty cheap from the old Ebuyer too!

I've used Draytek routers for the past eight or so years.. Some of their products support cable and their product comparison table can be found here:

Not cheap, but I've never had one let me down and the web management interface is better than anything else I've used before.

Its a very good router, even better if you can get hold of the earlier ones.

 

Linksys are good, Netgear are good - they would be the ones I'd use most often.

Do yourself a favour and get a draytek vigor, the only budget router I would ever reccomend. A lot of people reccomend cheap routers because "I've had a such and such for years and its great" but do they have anything to compare it with? Whilst a Draytek is more expensive, this is a definate 100% case of getting what you pay for.

Great combination, works with cable modems, excellent security, good for remote access via cisco vpn client.

I have a d-link modem very good price and good range. I have a main computer using an enthernet port and 3 laptops on wirless. Does the trick.

Someone will tell you Draytek are good too (not a fan).

Draytek's are like Skoda's. There will be the odd exception, but by and large there are few dissatisfied owners. Even owners like me who use VOIP!
