Redundancy

I have an admin team that consists of 5 members, one of whom is a supervisor. We have automated the majority of their work and as such they spend the first two days of the week busy and then from Wednesday to Friday essentially twiddling their thumbs. The supervisor role has essentially become obsolete and at the same time the admin role is overstaffed.
Do I go down an overall admin redundancy and use a performance-based selection criteria, or is it easier to just make the supervisor role redundant?
Thank you

I would (if not already done so) check out the ACAS website but it sounds like you have already answered your own question, the supervisor role is no longer required and at the same time you need to reduce the size of the admin team.

If you make the supervisor role redundant who is going to supervise the staff going forward

So, in essence, I can go down the supervisor redundancy route and also lower the admin team in one fell swoop?
We have two directors that work out of the same office that can manage the team along with a finance manager that can as well. Fortunately the team is small enough for this to be manageable.

Start at the beginning. What roles do you now need to get the work done? Remember - roles, not people. Once you have that assessment it should be clear what roles (or parts of roles) are not needed. Then you start consultation with all potentially affected staff to see if they can come up with alternative proposals which reduce the need for compulsory redundancy (including voluntary redundancy).
