I frequently get email updates from this site, about new posts that are clearly made by persons with no other objective that to sell their (usually questionable) product / service / investment opportunity.
Granted, the posts are usually quickly removed by moderators etc. but not before the email alerts have gone out to any number of subscribers, and therefore the person posting has already got some outreach.
Of course, I delete the emails but it's nuisance and waters down the genuine ones, and reduces the effectiveness and value of the platform.
What can be done to cut this back, and (a) reduce the spam, but (b) more importantly prevent these people from benefiting in the way they do
