Hi are there any pub/bar owners on here that can advise me about performing licenses or rights for playing outdoors.

My band is wanting to get some gigs under our belt and we thought a nice way to do this would be to put some impromtu free concerts on over the summer outdoors using our own gazebo and generator, but we're not sure about whether the public places such as parks, promenades etc need to have a license or permission to do this. We will be playing completely original music so there is no copyright music rights payments required for instance.

hi am getting married soon and we're having a festival style wedding hopefully. my friend is a farmer so we have a field to hold the night do in but was wandering about the music side obviously there is no charge for people to come as they are all our guests and it will be a private do on private property! so does the license still apply in our situation?? any advice would be much appreciated thank you Tom

Hi Bewdy.

In respect of PRS/PPL:

You will not need to worry about 'PRS for music' (Performing Right Society) licensing so long as none of the lyrics or composition have been written or composed by an active member of 'PRS for music'.

PPL (Phonographic Performance Ltd) is not applicable as they do not license Live performances of music.

Hope this helps!

All the best, good luck & regards.

Hi Tom

In respect of PRS (Performing Right Society)/PPL (Phonographic Performance Ltd):

Your event falls within one of PRS for music's current Discretionary Charging Policies - 'Family Orientated Events' (Weddings, Christenings, Birthday Parties + more) This is where they choose not to make a charge.

Your event also falls within a current PPL (Phonographic Performance Ltd) Discretionary Charging Policy 'Private Family Events' as follows:

PPL does not make a charge when recorded music is played for functions of a purely domestic or family nature, such as wedding receptions, christening parties or domestic birthday parties, when:

• Attendance of guests is by personal invitation only (except for staff, performers, etc.)
• The function is held in a privately-booked room, not at that time open to the general public
• There is no form of charge made for admission
• There is no financial gain to the function’s organiser or host (e.g. the person hiring the venue)

PPL are not applicable for Live performance(s) such as bands, musicians, vocalists performing live even if they are members of PPL.

Hope this helps!

All the best & Congrats too!
