I am looking into starting a company soon.

I will be outsourcing my payroll when the time comes.

I just want to know in advance what i require to the company ?

What do they do?

How easy is it to do myself?

How do i pay Ni and Tax for employers etc.

The HMRC CD-ROM is free but hopeless. I dont have a link to it though.

Once you register as an employer, HMRC will send you all the details of how to pay the tax and NI, and details of when to pay it.

For a single user I think the CD ROM does a good job

Payroll is one service which you can outsource so very cheaply, and as such unless you really have desires to do it yourself I wouldnt - in my opinion its just not worth the time and hassle.

My firm runs payroll for clients as do many accountants as well payroll specialists.

Most payroll providers will ask you to send details of your employees hours etc and then email/post to you payslips and details of the tax and National Insurance due as well maintaining the payroll records, completing the end of year tax forms P35 and P60/P14 as well as dealing with things like SSP, SMP etc. Some companies will also provide a BACS service.

Basic payroll is fairly straightforward especially if you use some good software like Moneysoft (my favourite) http://www.moneysoft.co.uk/pm_intro.htm but having to deal with one-offs like end of year returns and SSP etc can take quite some time to sort out when you havent dealt with it before.

I wouldnt worry about payroll now though until you have decided what business you are going to set up, and then if you are actually going to employ anyone, having just seen your other post.

I've used my accountant's payroll service from my first employee. I wouldn't even think about doing myself. Most accountants have a payroll service.
