PAYE Tools Submission Errors - Help Please!

Hi all,

We have used Basic PAYE tools without problem for about a year. However, last week my partner surprised me by taking my laptop for a service during which they wiped all the software and app data from my computer. As I didn't know this was going to happen I hadn't made a back up beforehand. Lesson learnt to do so regularly regardless!

I have had to reinstall the software and have re-entered employer and employee details. Of course all the previous submissions are no longer there but I do have records of them all elsewhere and can see them in my PAYE account also, so am not too concerned by that. My problem occurs when I try to send a FPS for the employee.

I enter my log in but the submission fails every time and returns the error code '1046 Authentication failure. The supplied user credentials failed validation for the requested service' I have checked all details are correct. I have called HMRC and they didn't seem to know why it wouldn't work. Any suggestions? Do I need a new Activation Code maybe? I'm getting a bit concerned as the submission is going to be late unless I can resolve this ASAP. All help very gratefully receive! Thanks, Rachael

Obviously, a more considerate and sensible partner is required as a matter of urgency. Laptops do not require servicing, but they do require replacing every few years.

Anything you save should be on a 'Save' folder that can be conveniently backup up and moved between computers.

Call HMRC in the morning!

The dating agency can wait a few days until you've sorted this out. Until then, keep your partner out of your office. I do not venture into my wife's office and I do not even go near Mrs. M's office who guards our books with the attention of a mother lion of her cubs. They, in turn, keep the F away from my stuff!

The most common reasons for error 1046 are:

You entered your user ID and password incorrectly in e-Submission Settings.
HMRC have updated your tax district/reference but you haven't updated it within your software.
The Gateway is busy at the time of submission and can't validate your details.
You selected the Submit as an agent check box when you're not registered with HMRC as an agent.

Have you re updated the software since the "service", it is possible whilst you have reinstalled the software it has not fully updated to the latest version (especially if you installed from a backup), from memory HMRC gov gateway rejects connections if the software isn't correctly up to date

Thanks everyone for your help, so it turned out that I had to delete and re-enter the the accounts office reference in the set-up (even though it appeared to be accurate) and this resolved the problem. Not sure why it happened but it was a good fix nonetheless! Partner is now banned from my laptop!
