I feel sorry for all the businesses running adwords campaigns in my area for security alarm installation. They must've have heard people don't google security.

I'm with Ian & Matt on this. People Google everything. To suggest security is an exception doesn't make any sense.

But feel free to prove me wrong by providing some evidence.

Steve

PS I know a locksmith that does very well out of his SEO rankings. Surely that's a related business?

I`m the security guy, your the internet expert - you prove it works!

People do not buy security from the internet, they buy face to face.

Oh, in the face of such convincing evidence, I stand corrected.

People do not buy security from the internet, they buy face to face.

It seems you're frantically back-peddling. What you said was "people don`t google security".

Did you forget what you claimed? Or have you just realised you can't defend it and are now pretending you never said it?

not at all, I did think this site might have grown up while I was away, that was wasted time.

So I suppose your idea of a "grown up" discussion is one where, when someone can make a claim, no-one is allowed to ask them to back it up?

What you've claimed - that people don't google security - can be easily disproven by the google adwords keyword tool.

Thats all by the by, the poster originally said he wasnt getting any sales via his website since its been live.

Saxondale is right, no one buys security off the internet, they certainly get a phone number to ring one but they dont buy.....and thats my experience too being in the same industry, everyone Ive given aquote too have either been word of mouth or got our phone number off the website, thats all our website does. so lets move away from the adwords angle

what saxondale said was that people dont google security which means by definition in his eyes, those who own a security business are wasting their time having a website on google in order to get orders. By the same token, presumably in his eyes, adwords are also a waste of time because no one will click them.

But, people will click adwords and they will visit websites(via google) in order to research the business concerned, get their phone number and either ring them or email them with an enquiry - none of which they would do arguably if the site wasnt there in the first place.

Why is the security business any different to any other business re. the above?

Again, in case it was missed - no one is saying people buy domestic security of any great substance directly off a website - why would they??

I dont think it is Matt and I duly note your points,my own feeling on internet sales is such that if your selling widgets and sprockets everyone knows what they are and where they go. Commercial/Domestic and what we term heavy service industry has many connotations of application and needs to be tailored/bespoke which cant be done effectively via the internet.

Mainly what myself and I'm not speaking for Saxondale but he might agree with me that the poster sounded typical of the 'lets put a website up and sit back and everyone will be phoning us with business' model, which we all know just isnt like that at all,its an extra tool in our box.

Hi All, I have set-up a website for a friend who runs a security alarm business. After around 6 weeks he is getting on average around 10-15 uniques per day.

I have checked google analytics and webmaster tools and we are getting SERP traffic for the keywords we are targeting.

I have put his phone number and physical address in the header; he has also dedicated a specific phone number so he can track leads. yet we still have not had a single phone call/lead, can anyolne provide any advice on what i might be doing wrong? How come none of these visitors are phoning for a quote?

All advice greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!!
Not understanding ANYTHING about web site set up, links SEO and any other IT language, if you are getting 10 to 15 hits a day, with no calls then the website content is wrong!
Thats like 10 to 15 people dialling yr no and putting down the phone before getting through!
Is the content complicated, too simple, no pricing, lacking info. Are there any referenced accounts assuming you are installing. just a thought ...

Agreed.

People will buy a product, but rarely a solution.

And yes, i too am in the industry. (although Bri and Sax knough that)

Thanks to everyone who provided advice to me and responded to the post. I just wanted to clarify that I am not expecting anyone to buy anything fom the website, all I am trying to do is to generate leads from the website. In this sense, the website is just another route to market, like leaflets, cold-calling, paper adverts...the website is part of an overall marketing strategy.

Thanks for responding. In terms of online advertising, we have done article marketing, submitting to social bookmarking sites, craiglists ads and also forum marketing (via signature link). We have had over 300 uniques in 6 weeks (not a lot I know, but a start) and are ranked #13 in google for one of our target keywords.

With regards the comment that we need 100-150 hits per day, that may be true for typical info product sales, where conversions are around 1%; this website is a blog, and there is no copy as such to sell anything. we are trying to build trust so that people looking for a house alarm system will contact us.

I hope that clarifes and once again I appreciate you taking the time to respond and offer advice.

Like people have been saying, your visitor count is far to low.

You are not the only person in this boat, I created an online store for someone just the other month and he is only getting around 10 - 15 visitors a day, he was also expecting leads however I told him that the number of visitors to the website needs to increase dramatically before any conclusion can be had.

I also had the same problem on a personal website I created ages ago, the site was free to sign up but hardly anyone did at the beginning because the visitor count was so low.

Not true. Based on 10 - 15 hits a day thats about 400 odd hits a month so over the month if you have a compelling and well designed site, you should still be converting regardless whether you get the 400 visits over a month or over a day. Even at a poor enough conversion rate of about 1% then you should still be receiving 4 leads over the month.

I agree.

If you send 400 visitors to a site with a 1% conversion rate, there's a 1.8% chance of getting zero conversions.

So, if this guy has had 400 visitors and no conversion, you can be 98.2% confident that this isn't a site with 1%+ conversion rate.

If he's had 600 visitors and no conversions, you can be 95% confident that his conversion rate is below 0.5%.
