As said already, time should not be spent chasing dofollow links only, don't even worry whether a link is nofollow or not. A website's link profile should look natural and healthy, not one that is artificially generated, a nice mix of dofollow and nofollow backlinks, some with keywords in the anchor text, some not and some from pages with PageRank and some from pages without is the sort of link building that will benefit most long term.
Apart from anything else, just because Google states that, doesn't mean it's entirely the case, they can tell you anything they want and people will believe it unless they carry out conclusive experiments to prove otherwise.
Yes Google might say a nofollow link does not pass PageRank or anchor text, but that doesn't mean other search engines don't.
And so what about PageRank and anchor text anyway... It is my strong belief that a nofollow link will still pass relevancy and trust and should the ultimate purpose of the link not be to generate traffic anyway?
