Hi,

I was just looking at doing an advert in the Manchester Evening news.
They had a rate card which for example says £460 for a full page or £230 for half a page.

Im guessing these prices are not set in stone so was just wondering if anyone has any idea of how much i can get these down by.

Cheers

I thought it was in the paper but having another look its in the Urbanlife section (the pubs/clubs bit i think).

Heres the link to their rate card.

I didnt see your ad, but i only pick it up on thurs/friday when its free.

I never read advert pages personally so the only way i would look at doing an advert would be if i was doing a half or full page. Id consider a quarter page bt anything less than that if i wouldnt look at it, i cant expect other people to.

Cannot help with MEN but if you want to try national papers the prices have really come down and you can negotiate on prices. We only have a small ad 3x2 in the Express Newspaper but is reasonably priced ask for Ajay. We also place an ad in the Mirror same size for £50.
We are also looking to do some more advertising so if you find anything really good give us a heads up! You can get free ads in Loot or v cheap trade ones.

When I opened my shop, I placed regular adverts in the local paper to no avail. We made a point of asking new customers how they found us and it was either word of mouth or on the web! Needless to say I won't bother with adverts in the paper again.

I think it suits some businesses though. A local pet shop places adverts every now and again and always gets a good response.

I Love Spreadsheets

Many, many years ago when I was working in computer retail the boss used to take all the last minute cancellation ad space from the local paper. It would mean that we would have about an hours notice to knock up an advert but he was only paying 10% of the normal price.

It worked in his favour because of the saving and it worked in the papers favour because they could always get rid of ad space at a moments notice. As a result we would be advertising 2 or 3 times a week.

Its a tactic I have never seen done since

Interesting that so many of you think advertising in newspapers doesnt work, and also thinking that £50, or even £500 gets you somewhere!!!

We have been advertising in the national papers and large upmarket magazines for 18 years and it works - our entire business was built on reader offers, and whilst these are all but gone advertising in papers still works.

Our latest campaign just before christmas was in the telegraph on saturdays, with one final advert on tursday between christmas and new year, a 25x4 advert was a cool £3500 each....
