Hello everyone,
I set up my online jewellery shop sparklesjersey.co.uk in December. I'm new to running an online shop so I'm learning as I go. I seem to be geeting people to the site but not as many sales as I'd expect for the volume of visits. I'm on Twitter, a Facebook, Instagram and recently Pinterest. They all seem to be great for advertising but as I say not as many sales as I'd expect.
I want to grow the business and build up my knowledge as much as possible.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance guys
Katie

Hi Katie, I'm in a similar position to you and I would strongly recommend joining as a full member and getting your site reviewed. When I started I thought my site was great and also wondered why I wasn't getting much sales so when I got the site reviewed loads of issues were noticed and its helped me generate a sales and marketing plan and also make improvements to the site. I learnt its not as simple as making a website with a product you think people want, then creating a facebook, twitter and google profile and having a bit of advertising, you have to get everything right...which at first is hard unless you listen to advice and do lots of research.

Katie, do you buy from people who post on your facebook wall? Do you browse instagram and buy things you see?

Social media is great for being social but mostly pants for selling anything (as you have already discovered). All the gurus who suggest SM is the way to promote a business are telling porkies, if you want to sell your stuff you need to advertise - however your site needs a lot of work to make it effective. If you want a site review you need to join as a full member - there are loads of things you need to fix.

It's not just your site - you need to change your marketing strategy. Posting on SM sites isn't going to build the business. You need to promote the products on multiple channels. This means getting onto ebay and amazon, adwords, banners and SEO.

As I'm Jersey based, I'm also getting flyers out, and there has been word of mouth sales which is good. The advice so far from you all is very helpful.
I've done a report on my site now and it's shows what's wrong with it, is think I'll start working my way through it to get it all fixed. I suppose I'm going to be learning long the way. Thanks again.

What's this report? The things that are wrong are not things you can get from an automated report. The changes you need to make are on the customer journey not the structure of the site.
