I am looking a new Android phone I have searched on here but very little is covered

What would you recommend I would prefer one with a big screen !
I currently have a Samsung A21s but it is now a bit slow for the requirement

My favorite phone is still a Blackberry but I dont think that would be effective today !

Don't touch the Samsung A12. Major pronlems with internet connectivity.
Not sure why you would spread falls information about the A12. In your thread asking for help we explained in detail to you that this is caused by you using a cheap crappy ISP provided router with poor wifi implantation that is the root cause of your problem.

For phones it all comes done what your requirements are.

Good build quality and long battery life Motorola G series with 5000ma batteries is the way to go 6.9" lcd options so you get the bigger screen and well priced.

Huawei is quite good as well for build quality and being reliable with midrange battery life.

I prefer Samsung Galaxy Series , the A series are crap at best. Galaxy "Ultra" is only really required if you want a better camera compared to the normal Galaxy Series.

Oneplus I would stay away from they are not that good anymore.

That was suggested, but in fact the problem was that the phone was incapable of detecting when it was connected to any router so mobile data did not kick in when you were out of range.

Your own words in the thread : Went back to the shop where the extremely patronising young man downloaded (using the shop Wifi, which worked perfectly),

Rest be assured Jeremy Samsung mobiles fully adhere to the WiFi org specs and this alleged problem on the a12 is either related to picnic or cheap access point issues.

But it shows clearly one thing that if you go cheap on mobiles you waste time, money and battery life. Midrange to top is a much better value for money and ux than buying crapy £100 phones.

Very few people understand just how bad most ISP provided routers are. Almost everyone just uses what they are given for free - after all the ISP promised its good.
Always be aware any new Huawei phone won't have access to Google Play Store for apps or any Google services.

Most of what I use is available on F Droid. The only real problem is Whatsapp.

I agree I am not typical so most people probably should not buy Huawei.

Unless, like me you are not a heavy phone user. I prefer to use a tablet (also cheap) for web browsing, watching videos, and reading ebooks (until I buy a separate reader) and I do not use things like social media apps (I use social media only on my desktop).

Agree they are fine if you know how to get round things - most people won't even know what F Droid is though.

I bought a phone last year and wanted a big screen with 5G, so got a Motorola G 5G and have been happy with it.

    I have also got a Realme 8 5G.

Both do what I want, but if you want all singing and dancing, you might be disappointed. For all standard things, they do a good job.

Why does it have to be android out of interest? I don’t understand why people by expensive android these days. It used to be because it’s on much cheaper phones than iPhone but these days Samsung sell for similar price don’t they? So why would anyone want android when similar price gets iOS? I’m just curious.

Here are some reasons not to by an ios running phone.

    1. battery life is poor at best
    2. tied into a poor performing eco system
    3. no ability to install 3rd party apps in case apple decides they dont like the app and block it out
    4. Security, ios security is poor at best compared to the likes of Android for years now.
    5. IOS UX is very laggy even on their top performance phones at best if you compare it to let's say a Samsung Ultra.
    6. repairs on ios based phone are shit at best. Listing to Apple bullshitting for crap they caused to wiggle out of repairs plus appointment based systems. I can walk into my local Samsung store and get it sorted the same day. They actually keep spare parts.
7, ios user interface becomes understandable one you have half your brain removed.
    8. Lighting cable is based on usb 2 specs that's a 12 year old standard on brand new phones.
    9. ios is missing a lot of actually really useful features Android users enjoy for years but I'm sure Apple will claim in a couple years they came up with it.

As a side note I have to admit the iphone SE is good value for money so I give that Apple.

@majordan why do you equate Android with higher priced Samsumg?

Unlike Apple, you have a wide choice - you can buy an Android phone for under £100 (probably won't be that great). My 2 phones are £130 - £200 and I think they are both great, but I don't want/need SLR quality photography, 8k screens, tea maker etc. I know I could get better, but I had a choice of more than 4 options!

Big one for me. Most of my apps are installed from F-Droid. Some break various app store terms and conditions (e.g. New Pipe, an unoffical Youtube client) some that are allowed on Android but not iOS (e.g. real Firefox, not the thing based on Safari for iOS)

    6. repairs on ios based phone are shit at best. Listing to Apple bullshitting for crap they caused to wiggle out of repairs plus appointment based systems. I can walk into my local Samsung store and get it sorted the same day. They actually keep spare parts.

A big one for society. Apple phones are less green because being deliberately designed not to be repairable means more ewaste and more manufacturing. The latter is good for Apple, but terrible for the environment.

If you really want to be green buy a Fairphone (Android) - hardly anyone does, which I think says something about how willing people really are to make even small changes or extra expenses for the environment.

... if you want a cheap phone or non-approved apps android is ok I suppose.

    "non-approved" by whom?

    WaveJumper:
Me neither Apple all the way for me

Powerful arguments indeed. Such flawless impeccable logic is clearly beyond any reproach.

Based on these unassailable opinions from such eminent international authorities on computer science and technology, I humbly request the forum's permission to withdraw for a year or two so that I may reassess my life and transfer to the Apple space after begging their divine forgiveness for having ever doubted them.

"non approved" - I expect they mean non approved by Google as the majority of people will get their apps from there...although I'm sure you realised that is what was meant.

I always find the Android/iOS bickering a bit sad and pathetic on both sides - enjoy what you enjoy and don't mind that others like other things.

I suspect most people have never heard of Fairphone. I only know from reading techy sites like Ars Technica.
How many of the people who have heard of it have bought one?

Why are environmental campaigners not telling people to by repairable phones?

Ok. I’ve never had any of the issue stated or a need for non-apple store apps.
Did you know non-stores apps existed? its not worth it for iOS because iPhones have to be jailbroken to install unapproved apps, but many for Android. It also means that future policy changes will not affect you. Microsoft have just announced a ban on the sale of open source software through the app store for Windows (whatever it is called), and Apple have left the option of doing that open (their terms and conditions are incompatible with open source licences - they have never enforced this, but could do and have never clarified their position).

I use to swear by android then moved totally to Apple a few years ago, done away with the six screen trading station run three macs with 26inch high res screens two laptops and two iPads, plus my trusty phone ....... and the best bit is they all sync together. at the end of the day everyone to their own you either love it (Apple) or hate it just pick whats right for you.

    they all sync together
Since Apple realised they can't actually build shit or something that works or is secure on the cloud they had to ask their buddy's from Google and AWS to host their infrastructure to sync your stuff.

Before Google and AWS where hosting their iCloud system, which was a clusterfuuck of old tech mended poorly together, iClouds hacks were the norm and a feature.

So the companies that are big supporters and contributors to Androids eco system are running the show for Apple.

Anyway whatever gets the job done for you.

as I mentioned pick what works or feels right for you.
Love threads like this as people do tend to be one side or the other, and no where in between. Like the Windows v MacOS or the Xbox v PlayStation discussions.

If I was 15 years younger I'd probably go Android and love hacking it just like I used to run Linux as my desktop OS of choice and do the same. These days I don't use any bespoke apps and can't be bothered to hack or tweaks what I use, just need a web browser and Microsoft Office generally, and love the Apple ecosystem. I use an iMac at home, a MacBook Pro at work, an Apple Watch on my wrist and an iPhone in my pocket - and I love how they all just sync and work together.

I’ve got an old Motorola Razr that still works. Can even connect to t’internet with it. Gets £10 top up every now and then which is quite exciting as the shop staff all want to have a play.
