Hi guys,

I recently entered a 'design an app' competition in college and I was just informed that myself and four others have made it through to the next round where we will be selling the concept to as many customers as possible in the up and coming 'College Christmas Market'.

We will each be given a stall approximately 5ft long and 2ft wide with a table cloth.

This is from the email:

'You can use any marketing material you see fit to sell your product concept on the day. You may use prototypes, pictures, storyboards and videos along with any other innovative marketing you would like.'

What I would like to know is how you think I should set my stall up? I've never done anything like this before and if anyone has any previous experience they could pass on it would be highly appreciated. I can't think of the first thing to include in the stall. All input would be a great help :)

Edit: I do not particularly want to disclose the idea at the moment because there is a chance that this concept may be pursued, but if you need to know what the idea is roughly based around then I'll attempt to answer any questions you may have!

Thanks guys

Welshy,

For me i would say keep it basic and keep it clear.

Your table should be decorated to make it look nice, but dont over clutter. at the end of the day it all about your product(or idea) not about how well you can dress a table.

Think of the Features & benefits of your App, and how it would be sold the public if it went all the way.

List the features & benefits on a flyer or postcard (get some made for less than £50) Make them clear and make sure the benefits and actual benefits that you agree with, dont just fill the space.

for example

"dog brush that kills fleas"

Features - Brush and flea killer in one go
Benefit - owner only needs one brush, only has to groom once a week

or

"new car that can fly over traffic"

Feature - Car can fly
Benefit - Owner isnt kept waiting at the traffic lights

See the difference between the two?

First thing in sales is to learn how to apply these things to your product, get that right and you are more than halfway there.

I would agree to keep it simple, It depends how much time and money you would like to put into your stall?
Having leaflets made up is a great idea (if you are interested, give me a PM)

Dont sit behind your table waiting for people to come over, be standing in front, look happy, create a buzz around your event.
DIRECT MARKETING! Pace, pitch, attitude - Ask everyone

One thing ive learnt from trade shows is to put your chairs at the FRONT of your desk.

People actually like the idea of getting to sit down for a moment, and makes it easier to have a longer discussion with a potential buyer

Like someone else said, don't hide behind your stand, get out there invite people to sit down and have a chat with you.

Thanks for the input guys!

The passers by will all be students (and some staff) and they will vote at the end of the day which app they think is the best. I feel as though I am at a big disadvantage because some competitors will be students at the University it is at which leads me to believe people will simply be voting for their friends.

Am I dead and buried before it's even started!? (I do actually know a few people at the Uni myself!)

I kind of like that idea! Although I think I may opt for Celebrations as opposed to personalised chocolates!

I'm just wondering how much of this is actually going to be 'I'm voting for my friend' as opposed to 'I'm voting for the best idea.' It will be extremely annoying if it's more the former because I really, really do want to win this competition.

Oh well, I guess I can only try my best!

We have all been there at competitions like this, when you just vote for your friend.
But I have also been in the situation, where I feel guilty voting for my friend because there is somebody who is trying harder and is more passionate. They always get my vote. Earn your vote, if you give it 100% and dont win, you will leave alot of people feeling guilty

Concentrate on your own app and idea, dont get distracted by the other competitors - put them out of your mind and push your own stuff.

i would rent the stall out to raise some more money, then put posters up all round the venue, use the PA system to tell people about it, and have roaming people dressed accordingly to chat to people.

If you can also do an act, to get peoples attension, ninja's on motorbikes would get peoples attension.

Good Luck

Hey guys,

Just thought I'd let you all know that I won the competition! :)

£150 cash and a session with an app designer to come.

The chocolate idea went down a storm, thanks a lot for the input! :)

More than likely once the app begins its production, although I'm eager to let you all know as I've only heard positive remarks so far!

I'll be sure to let you know as soon as I can :)
