Need advice on promoting my website

Hiya,

I've been considering different ways to promote my site, and need help
brainstorming. So far, I've been using fairly traditional methods:

1) registering the site with search engines
2) engaging in link-exchanges
3) posting adverts when appropriate
4) doing some bogstandard SEO
5) pestering friends and family to promote the site, and
6) creating backlinks to my website

The main problem I see with promoting it is that it is a service
targeted at people who probably don't know they need it, or that
something like it even exists because of the legality of the service. Thus,
getting good positioning on search engines doesn't help much.

Would it be worthwhile paying for ads, say via Google AdSense? Or are
there other avenues I'm missing?

If this is the case then you also need to focus on adjusting perceptions toward the service you are offering. What might work is if you use this mis-conception about your industry as part of a campaign to explain the value, the legality, the widespread use, how to go about it etc and focused on such media formats as YouTube videos and Facebook applications that, if thought through properly, will go viral and give you a sizable exposure footprint. You should create news worthiness in the campaign, shake things up a bit, get people to discuss the subject, be controversial, participate on blogs etc.

To help you evaluate the best way forward i think you need to let us have some FREE samples

Try related forums (eg. escorting review sited and forums) as they will be targeted for you.

You could also try classifieds, and PPC at some secondary search engines and other media (try Plenty of Fish, the dating site, excellent for targeting 18+ adults, not sure on their rules in the escort niche is the only thing)

Also you could post pics at some pic sharing sites which link back to the site

Video is a very powerful medium, and it will get stronger as more sites incorporate it. I read somewhere that sites who dont include video, will get left behind.

Youtube may work well for an Escort service - you can then be a face, it adds the 'human touch' to advertising, and yes, can go viral.

Might be worth you getting a press release out into the media, setting yourself as an expert, where you can explain the benefits of escorts and put people at ease about it all.

This is the official line but there do seem to be quite a few ads getting through for location based searches at the moment... I certainly wouldn't rely on it as a source of traffic though.

I've actually been approached myself recently to work on SEO for a site in this industry and although I am not sure if I am going to accept the job, if I was I would certainly be thinking along the lines of the excellent advice given by PIngels.

Aside from potentially hitting organic adult content filters, the main problem I see with this is getting links from what are considered good quality sources and to create really good content and stir up controversy and discussion seems like a great way to get people who would never normally in a million years link to you to do so.

People tend to link more easily to sites that are non commercial in nature and a common approach in scenarios such as this (and I'm not going to get into the ethical arguments or effectiveness of this here) is to set up a separate website to run your campaign which is less commercial in nature and once the campaign has died down, move the content to your main site and 301 the campaign one.

Another way of taking some of the headache out of traffic and links is to look for similar businesses who have recently stopped trading and see if their websites are for sale

It's very important to understand that these kind of tactics can carry risks and if you are not 100% sure what you are doing it is best to work with someone who has experience in this area.
