My view is pretty much aligned to what @WaveJumper is alluding to, in the name isn't the most important part.

Think of some words that are important and make up a word from the letters they begin with. My first company was called Netrotech, a completely made up name. Two words and my initials in the middle, because every other domain name I could think of was taken.

    interNET RO TECHnology

My current company name was chosen by my board of directors to have words that fitted the long term strategy, looks good on the paperwork.

What you don’t want to do is choose a name that precisely defines what you do. The more generic it is the greater the scope for future expansion.

I work in property development, myself and others like me avoid property developers and estate agents, like the plague. They know this, so they try and hide who they are, they try and make out they are homeowners.

Pick a nondescript name, or you may struggle to get Architects and structural engineers, etc, on board.

If you are already know in the industry it would an advantage to use your name, So they tell me
Don’t have that problem. Nobody knows who I am. Even my mum gets it wrong most of the time.

The name is VERY important, this is not really a start-up, more labelling something that's already established... I manage over £5mill worth of property for my parents in London and Bristol, currently on their own names, we're looking to move it across to ltd. This name is going on the properties, cars, vans, business cards, trade accounts etc etc. I am often approached by other landlords or developers and have converted a few properties into hmo's for them as well. We are still growing quietly but quickly. This is well overdue.

All surname suggestions made above are taken unfortunately and nor can i use any close variation of surname homes ltd. The reason i want to use my surname is that it sounds similar to Barrat homes. Looks like it may have to be something generic.

Appreciate all responses above, I've read them all.

Just another thought - do you really want your name attached to the business name/brand, you may decide to sell the business one day to someone with a different name to you?
never selling... simply building a brand name for properties aquired.
Kind of agree with a lot of the above, it's not like you particularly need a brand to resonate with consumers. It could be anything.

No idea what the M4 in your username is for, but who cares, use that. M4 Homes Ltd.

    Job done.
    m4 hmo - HMO's along the M4 motorway :D
I work in property, and like many others who come onto the forum, stop worrying about the name. Seriously, no one cares until you reach world domination level.
it matters see post above this...

We own the properties... its established... my dad is a chartered structural engineer, i'm qualified electrics, and in carpentry, kitchens, bathrooms etc - soon to be gas safe as well. These days i just manage the work - but still hands on. We never contract anything out. This name is to label whats already there... see post above.
Famous figures such as Kings, Poets, Generals or Field Marshalls such as 'Grenfell?'
    lol...shouldn't laugh.
    Either of the above

    Or

    Your first name
    A London square/landmark
    A made up word
london square/mark might be used as I am based in London

    Have you tried your surnamehomesales?

Before registering a domain name it might make more sense to approach it from the other direction, can you register the name as a ltd company? The UK Gov try to avoid too much confusion so will not allow similar names to other companies anyway.

You can have a different ltd name, t/a domain name but it can look messy.

Respectfully I do not think the name is a make-or-break thing, I have never worked with another company based on their name, a no client has ever indicated that it was our name that lead them to work with us, just make sure your name is consistent with the overall branding, if you want to be seen as a serious company avoid a funny or witty name, if you want to be seen as approachable then avoid an acronym, if you want to highlight you're a family business then make sure to include that in the name, if you want to be international then make sure your name translates well to your secondary market, personally I use Yasmeen + niche and I have (few) domains related to my brand parked for future use.

I have gone with Surname Property LTD. It will be displayed on properties we own on the same road in London and Bristol. It will go on the cars and my van. It will go on the clothing for the guys that work for me once in a while on a major project. It may lead to larger jobs for other developers, it may lead to me managing and maintaining properties for others, once i have a team... Just thinking long term... I am always being asked to complete other projects (usual full property renovation/restoration) but am simply too busy to help anyone out right now. These people will check out the ltd company so it will help that the name represents me/family well. Thanks all for the suggestions ! Now to apply for this sui generis certificate to complete the mortgage requirements... !

Having the word ‘property’ in the company name could come back to bite you long term. A better option would be first name last name ltd. Gives you far more flexibility.

Just as an aside and joking apart, quite a few UK Housing Developers (Past and Present) have names beginning with 'B' and two syllables - Bellway, Bryant (Now TW), Beazer (Now Persimmon), Bovis (Vistry), Barratt, and Berkeley, etc.

I have some recent involvement with a Scottish Developer, trading as 'Menzies' - They play on the Scottish Pronunciation 'Minghis' - Although there is no 'Mr Menzies!' The usual penchant for rather 'Dreamy' House Model Names, that follow Landmarks, Flowers/Trees, Rivers and Poets, etc., was also dropped. Instead, they err towards more Heavy-Duty Industrial Names such as Bedford, Scammell, Foden, Gardner, and Paxman, etc. - Names that mean very little to the current generation of purchasers, but nonetheless follow a theme.

It depends on the type of business, I trade on my reputation, I put my money where my mouth is.

My company name is my initials, my trading address is my home.
Pretty much the same here. Two Partners and two names in the Business Title. HOWEVER, it is worthwhile checking how names appear in other languages, should the need arise - And, also take care with Initials and Acronyms.

He ended up using the first names of his sons, which keeps it very personal and people we like it when they find out.
    Along the lines of Amstrad...
