Hi All,

It seems as I'm getting a lot of questions about this now so here's my top tips for protecting yourself if you still use windows XP.

Feel free to add any other points I've missed


Tips if you still want to use XP

1. Install all Microsoft Updates until your workstation is fully up-to date.
2. Update your Microsoft Office Suite. Older versions of office can also be exploited.
3. Make sure you have an up to date Internet security suite like ESET Endpoint Security http://www.eset.co.uk/Business/Endpoint-Security/Endpoint-Security
4. Update all third party software such as adobe acrobat and java as these in themselves can be exploited. Old software is vulnerable software!
5. Install a supported Internet web browser such as Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox they are free.
6. Disable or update all web browser plugins
7. Use group policies to lockdown user profiles to reduce the effectiveness of an attack.
8. Setup a user account that doesn't have administrative rights and use this account for your day to day activities.
9. Don't open documents from untrusted sources
10. Keep your workstations behind a NAT router, don't use WiFi host spots or public network as your workstation will be wide open to attack.
11. If your workstation doesn't need to be on the internet then change the default gateway or restrict access.
12. Consider upgrading as this will be less hassle moving forward as this is only going to get worse as time moves on.
